Just more confirmation of the readying of the Nokia 808 PureView, it has been spotted on Navifirm. No software version mentioned yet.

Recap 2: Nokia 808 PureView, sans Sony Vegas induced Ghosting.

Posted: 13 May 2012 01:45 PM PDT

OK – Another little update to ‘s Nokia 808 video. This is just a sample of the birds part where some ghosting was seen in the 25FPS version, reduced slightly in the 30FPS version.

The original file didn’t have this artefact and was something done post processing by Sony Vegas.

You can see it now, clear anywhere you pause.

The ghosting problem at Nokia 808 video was due to only Sony Vegas “Force Resample” and “Smart Resample” modes. At “disable Resampl”e mode there no ghosting as you all may see in this video. So it was not Youtube’s fault in any way.

Lumiappaday #180: PAC-MAN demoed on the Nokia Lumia 800 XBoxLive

Posted: 13 May 2012 11:43 AM PDT

This game needs no introduction. It’s PAC-MAN! The game is controlled by a virtual joystick at the bottom. This  has all the effects and sounds of classic PAC-MAN (unlike the clone versions).

At £3.99 it’s hard to recommend for a bit of Nostalgia. It is still as ever, fun to play. As usual, there’s a trial so you can give it a go.

#180) PAC-MAN

Recap: topolino70′s Nokia 808 PureView sample now at 30FPS.

Posted: 13 May 2012 10:05 AM PDT

This is a reuploaded version of by ‘s Nokia 808 PureView video, this time encoded at 30FPS as opposed to 25FPS.

This does make a difference in reducing some of the ghosting (e.g. the birds). There is still possible degradation by YouTube.

New Nokia 311 Pics and look at the new multitouch, swipe S40 touch N9-ish UI in funky cartoon style manual

Posted: 13 May 2012 09:56 AM PDT

Lookie. More pics of the Nokia 311. But not just that. It comes with a cute manual unlike any I’ve seen before. It’s depicted like a little comic of sorts. It seems very personable, what with your guy (a cartoon character) using the phone through different tasks. BTW Nokia, please make all your future manuals like this. It’s a lot less clinical, and looks more approachable that this is a device for people.

Previous post: Bigger Picture:the leaked Nokia 305, 306, 311 (Smanua40 full touch)

What we can see again is more SWIPE.

Swipe them screens. Central MeeGo Harmattan like icon grid in middle, then homescreen on left and dialler on right. But based on what we last saw, these can be configured.

Swipe to answer

A look into the new UI. It’s very N9 like with those >

We can see pinch and zoom. That’s multitouch on S40 (if this is S40).

There are also pull down notifications. We’ve seen it before in the old manual but nice to see again.

MeeGo Lite anyone? Meltemi? S40 Touch? Whatever it is, it’s looking mighty fresh.

Nokia 808 PureView coming soon to Finland on Contract at DNA

Posted: 13 May 2012 09:18 AM PDT

One of the top three operators in Finland, DNA, is said to be stocking the Nokia 808 PureView soon. Actually it apparently says it’s on sale now :/ I can’t find anything on their website yet.

DNA’s prices are apparently 23EUR/24m or 45EUR/12M. Not sure if there is a translation error but the ‘subsidised’ price is 552EUR on 24m and 540EUR on 12M. That’s already more than the price we’ve seen for the Nokia 808 in UAE and India.

Update: Due to me rushing, I misinterpreted the values given. They just multitplied the length of the contract by the price per month, thus coming up with 23*24=552 and 45*12=540. This kinda suggests the phone is ‘free’ on contract. A SIM Free price is yet to be mentioned but I’d expect it to be around 450 EUR.

Update 2: Hang on I may not fully understand this still. Jonne in the comments said:

As others have already pointed out, phones are SIM-free in Finland. So in order to take the Nokia 808 Pureview via DNA, you'll need a cellular package via them, but you can choose whatever package you want. The phone will just add 23€ a month to that price.
So if you have a DNA Joustava 200 package, which is 9.90€ a month, then you'd pay 9.90€ + 23€ a month for 24 months. You can choose to pay the phone immediately, but still make a contract for 24 months. This would mean that you pay 552€ immediately, and then pay 9.90€ every month for the DNA Joustava 200. Joustava 200 again includes 200 minutes or messages. 1 message is worth 1 minute, so you could either send 200 messages or call for 200 minutes, or anything in between

New to me. I’m only aware of three systems (SIM Free, Pay and Go, Contract – one of payment for the phone, sometimes nothing and then monthly line rental. I’ve not encountered a system where you pay for the phone bit by bit AND a line – though they kinda work out the same as the line rental is cheap enough)

White Phones: Glossy vs. Matte the Verdict. (Plus Stormtrooper Beauty)

Posted: 13 May 2012 03:06 AM PDT

Just a quick point-out a lot of people where asking why the white Nokia phones are Glossy rather than having a Matte finish like the rest of the set (Cyan, Black, Magenta); well the reason can be seen in the photo above- one Redditor posted the above picture of his HTC OneX (which copies the use of the Polycarbonate body from Nokia) except that the White OneX has a Matte finish rather than a glossy one- which lead to the dyes and colors of his jeans rubbing off onto the phone- a huge shame, since the white OneX is pretty damn sexy as well (but not in the same league as the stormtrooper).

*TO be fair the dyes were wiped off with a damp cloth but still matte finishes definitely don’t mix with white.

In the meantime here are some more photos of the Beauty Queen/King.. the Stormtrooper: (possibly NSFW)

Video: AT&T Heavyweight Faceoff: HTC One X vs Nokia Lumia 900 – PocketNow

Posted: 13 May 2012 01:35 AM PDT

Here’s a really good video by Michael from PocketNow comparing the Nokia Lumia 900 vs the HTC OneX. This is presented as the two best alternatives to the iPhone. I found the comparison to be very fair. He’s also got an excellent speaking tone, no?

Michael says that even though on paper the Lumia seems less capable, on day to day usage his experience is more fluid. However, Androids by the day are getting stronger, with more power to cut the obvious lags. One of the main things that you can say about WP/Lumia is that the experience is of a high standard across the board. The 710 is snappy like the 800 and the 900. Different price tags, but all fluid. BTW, it is hard to notice lags if you’re not used to a very fast device. Until then, they seem fine (and that’s ok) but once you get used to the responsiveness, the lags do become annoying.

Windows Phone is pretty elementary at first. But don’t make the mistake of conflicting simplicity with stupidity

900′s Camera concerns me as these aren’t carrying off what is expected of Nokia/CarlZeiss. It looks great based on the samples we’ve seen but it has to be at Nokia’s standards, no? It is in part something WP related, but even N9 is of course no where near what we have come to expect from N8. The only thing that can redeem Nokia in the camera world again is letting the 808′s reputation speak for Nokia. The N8 did this for a while and that’s why for a long time, we heard tech bloggers praise the CZ Nokia cameras before ever using it.

BTW, I just wanted to add that WP works wonderfully with google mail and google calendar. They work amazingly well. Sign in and instant sync with mail/contacts/calendar. It’s not just for people who use hotmail. (I have that too. My sister and mum have Live and Yahoo accounts – all work fine).

The HTC has stepped up in design as it takes cues from the N9/900 with a polycarbonate body and a moulded screen with curved edges. Clearly, a winning design by Nokia which is ‘inspiring’ others and not the cheap, nothing special plastic it is accused to be (ElMu). Michael’s point that 900 ‘also’ has polycarbonate made me want to shout ‘noooo, HTC is the ‘Also’ haha’
