Posted: 25 May 2012 02:56 PM PDT It’s that time of the year again, when figures regarding mobile operating systems come in and we see some growing, some stagnating and some plummeting to the ground. The latest IDC numbers confirm that iOS and Android are doing very well, while Windows Phone is stable and BlackBerry OS and Symbian are dying. So, in Q1 2012 we have 89.9 million Android units shipped, with a market share of 59%, up 145% from the 36.1% market share of Q1 2011. Next up there’s iOS, with 35.1 million units shipped, for a market share of 23%, up 88.7% from last year’s 18.3%. Third place is Symbian, with 10.4 million units shipped somehow, plus a share of 6.8%, a huge drop of 60.6% from last year. BlackBerry OS also dropped 29.7%, reaching 9.7 million units and 6.4% market share. And finally we have Linux with 2.3% of the market and Windows Phone 7 and Windows Mobile bundled together at 2.2%. The MS mobile platform also got 3.3 million units shipped in the first 3 months of 2012, probably most of them being Nokia models. What’s important to note is that Windows Phone actually gained 26.9% share from last year. I guess that by 2013 Symbian will be lumped in with the “Other” section, that in the meantime swallowed Bada OS and webOS. Related posts: |
Nokia PureLambda Windows Phone 8 Device Spotted in Benchmark Posted: 25 May 2012 02:01 PM PDT Nokia is certainly preparing Windows Phone 8 devices, no doubt about that and that’s been confirmed recently by a bunch of interesting leaks. Among them we find the one here, that involves the mystery model Nokia PureLambda, a device that was spotted in the WP Bench benchmark. A lucky user playing with a benchmarking tool on his Lumia 800 found a new Nokia listed as the newest device tested and took a picture of it for My Nokia Blog. The model is listed as Nokia PureLambda and its OS version is shown as 8.0.9842. Other listings seem to include the names Nokia Phi, Pure Phi and Alpha. The “PureLambda” thing sounds very much like PureView to me, so I imagine this is one of the first handsets with both Windows Phone and a kickass camera with PureView technology. Of course, these could be mere codenames and in fact apply to already launched Lumia phones, but since this is Windows Phone 8 I don’t know how many models from Nokia can actually run the new OS right now. Anyway the signs are good and we expect to soon see some real pics of these new models. Related posts: |
AT&T HTC One X Bootloader Unlocked Unofficially Posted: 25 May 2012 09:54 AM PDT You’ve probably heard about the HTC One X on AT&T getting rooted two weeks ago, but sadly that didn’t make much difference, since it didn’t allow users to mess with custom ROMs. HTC has yet to offer an official bootloader unlocking solution, so users resort to unofficial ones. As usual you’ll get a ton of warnings about the canceling of your warranty, the risks of bricking the device and whatnot, but you end up with an unlocked bootloader on the AT&T One X. So you’ll start flashing ROMs, installing third party software, maybe even playing with some of features of the Galaxy S III ported to the One X via some new ROMs, who knows? You should also back up your data before proceeding to such unlocks. From what I can see on XDA, the unlock is more for people experienced with HEX editing and knowing how to work with an ADB, plus those who already rooted their phones. Well, I guess that seeing this progress, HTC may feel inspired to release its very own official unlock tool for the handset. Did you try this bootloader unlock? How did it work out for you? Samsung Announces New Dual SIM Phone: GT-S6802 Galaxy Ace Duos Posted: 25 May 2012 02:30 AM PDT Samsung just expanded its Duos lineup with yet another dual SIM phone, the Galaxy Ace Duos, also known under the codename GT-S6802. We’re dealing here with a version of the Galaxy Ace that allows you to insert two SIMs and has pretty decent midrange specs. This is an Android 2.3 Gingerbread device, with a 832 MHz processor, 512MB of RAM, a 3.5 inch HVGA display and WiFi. There’s also Bluetooth on board, 3GB of internal memory, a microSD card slot with support for memory cards up to 32GB. AGPS is on board as well, plus a 5 megapixel camera and a 1300 mAh battery, that should provide enough juice for at least one day of fun with your two SIMs. The handset runs Gingerbread with the TouchWiz UI applied and some preloaded software, such as ChatOn, Social Hub, Swype and a couple more. From what I understood, this model is already available in India and it goes for something like 190 euros. For that money you can also get a very decent Windows Phone from Nokia, so which one will you choose? Related posts: |
