Apple TV Set Is Real! Confirmed by Foxconn Big Boss!

Posted: 11 May 2012 12:38 PM PDT

The whole theory surrounding the Apple TV set came to life when the Steve Jobs biography came out and the Apple guru mentioned towards the end of his life that he had “cracked the code” and figured out television in the purest Apple way. Now, we have another confirmation that the television set is real, straight from the Foxconn boss, Terry Gou.

Foxconn is the hardware maker that handles the production of iPads and iPhones, so they’re the most certain source of info on the new product. Gou confirmed the TV set and we have info that the device will bring a high definition screen, most likely on Retina Display level, an aluminium case, Siri voice control and FaceTime videocalls. While all of those were speculated before, this time we know that the product is real, unless the Foxconn chief spoke out of turn.

It appears that Sharp is also on board with this idea and helping Foxconn out, most likely with the displays. Gou also mentioned that development and manufacturing hasn’t started yet, which sounds a bit odd, considering he seems pretty sure about the details of the product. I sure would like to see Apple commenting on the matter, but maybe they’ll let the product do the talking at WWDC 2012 next month…

RIM Developing Fuel Cell Batteries for Handsets

Posted: 11 May 2012 06:01 AM PDT

Research in Motion may not be coming up with any cool smartphone anytime soon, but at least they’re working on other fronts. Right now they’re developing fresh battery technologies, that involve a fuel cell for their electronics gear. They’ve actually applied for two new patents related to that matter.

One of the patents if for the fuel cell inside the electronic device, while the other is for the frame of the handset. The aim here is to fit a fuel cell into the tight space provided by a mobile device. At least the device frame shown in the patent seems a bit more modern than what RIM has been leaking lately. This doesn’t mean that there will be a viable BlackBerry phone with the new fuel method available anytime soon. You may end up charging your smartphone with lighter fluid or methanol as shown in some prototypes and concepts developed till now.

The good news here is that the fuel tank inside the phone could provide quite a bit of functioning time, maybe even a week or two. Right now, most modern smartphones only give you a day or two of use, which is very poor, by any standard. However, people want better cameras, better screens with crisp image, LTE and good cameras, so all of those drain up the battery power.

LG LS970 Eclipse 4G LTE Is a Fantastic Quad Core Snapdragon S4 Phone With 2GB of RAM

Posted: 11 May 2012 04:54 AM PDT

LG Optimus LTE2 shocked everyone last week, being announced a day after the Samsung Galaxy S III and packing 2GB of RAM. Now we have a new hot LG newcomer, that not only brings 2GB of RAM, but also a quad core processor of the Snapdragon S4 kind. I’m talking about the LG LS970 Eclipse 4G LTE model, pictured below.

This powerhouse of a smartphone uses a Qualcomm APQ8064 processor, one of the latest Krait designs, a quad core Snapdragon S4 to be more specific. It incorporates an upgraded Adreno 320 GPU, so its graphics will be fantastic. LG LS970 Eclipse 4G LTE features 16GB of storage, a 4.7 inch display with a strange 1280 x 768 pixel resolution and a 13 megapixel camera at the back. There’s also a 1.3 MP shoot at the front, for videocall purposes. So, LG has two 2GB RAM-packing handsets ready to compete with the Galaxy S III.

If we add the LG Optimus 4X HD in the mix we’ve got a very appealing portofolio from the company, but the prices will be the ones to say how appealing these models really are. Since this device supports LTE band 25, it’s likely that the LG Eclipse will come to Sprint, bringing 4G LTE support. Something else worth mentioning is the size of the smartphone: 8.6mm in thickness and 142 grams in weight.

Samsung Omnia M New Windows Phone Model With WP 7.5 and 4 Inch Screen

Posted: 11 May 2012 03:54 AM PDT

Samsung just announced the Omnia M Windows Phone 7.5 model, that features a 4 inch Super AMOLED display. Although Samsung has a huge amount of Android devices in its portofolio, it hasn’t been that generous when it comes to Windows Phone, since it only has the Omnia 7, Omnia W and Omnia M models in Europe and Asia. There was some other unit out there, but still the WP offer from Sammy is thin.

As far as the newcomer Omnia M goes, the device supports a 480 x 800 pixel resolution, 1GHz single core processor, 384 MB RAM, 4GB of storage and a 5 megapixel camera with HD capture. The specs are pretty “2010″ to me, unless you want a lower end smartphone. There’s also 0.3MP camera upfront, 3G and WiFi on board. Speculations say this model will cost less than 200 euros and it’s expected in Europe first and then other markets.

It also has a 1500 mAh battery and a 10.5mm waistline. Samsung Omnia M weighs 119 grams and you can actually consider it a dumbed down Samsung Omnia W if you want. I wonder if this model is WP Tango material, or simply another Mango unit with mediocre specs. Will that RAM be enough for it?! This unit would only make sense as a second phone for someone who already owns an Android superphone.
