Video: The John Kruk commercial for Nokia Lumia 900 (ESPN spot)

Posted: 15 May 2012 04:00 PM PDT

Getting super busy what with exams and such so I missed this video from Monday.

Here’s the advert we heard was coming back in March when John Kruk was reported to be advertising the Nokia Lumia 900.

http://mynokiablog.com/2012/03/20/john-kruk-recruited-for-nokia-lumia-900-advert-thom-gruhler-as-corporate-vice-president-wp-marketing/

It’s OK I guess. The angle here is the ESPN app, but they also talk about the camera (then snapping a quick picture subtly) and then mention the screen that’s visible outdoors (though no mention of Clear Black Display or actual demo of the screen, instead a simulated one (but I guess everyone does this).

What strikes me as funny at the end is the contrast to the very first (and poor ads) about Windows Phone, the one that shows everyone engrossed in their non-windows phones which gets them into trouble or lose sensory perception of things around them. (John goes to the Women’s bathroom, late for the Mexican wave) But that’s what we want to see. Being engrossed in the experience of the phone. A balance should be struck however – especially what with the future being all about that quick glanceable information and ‘heads up’ as Marko Ahtisaari likes to point out (in all of Nokia’s portfolio, especially N9 but making its way to WP too). We see a bit of that here, hence why John could still avoid those snacks being thrown around him and still catch that ball (though that’s also because he’s an athlete, in particular a baseball star) with a nice gesture to pass it onto the little girl (even though it’s just an ad, it’s still nice)

Somewhat of an odd shooting game I came across. It’s a mix between classic arcade shooting style with some 3D-esque environment. As noted in the review comments, it’s pretty much Space Harrier from the Sega Mega Drive.

90,000 Apps on Windows Phone Marketplace

Posted: 15 May 2012 10:10 AM PDT

Just a heads up. There’s now 90,000 Apps for WP marketplace. Rafe has the usual breakdown of the details as always:

http://allaboutwindowsphone.com/news/item/14819_Windows_Phone_Marketplace_pass.php

This makes it a total of (probably?) over 200,000 apps available collectively for all Nokia devices, were we to measure it like that – I mean, Nokia Store is itself a collection of apps for different mobile OS and variants.

To reiterate however, I’m not fussed on numbers. I care more about quality. Numbers might just be a useful thing to attract devs (well, once it reaches that threshold where it’s no longer described as anaemic in comparison to competition).

#Lumianation : Lumia event in Philippines – Open to all Lumia owners

Posted: 15 May 2012 02:32 AM PDT

Nokia Philippines is hosting Lumianation on Friday. It is expected to be for the local launch of the Nokia Lumia 900/610. It’s not something unexpected. The event boasts about a “club experience” presented in a “new light”. Of course the new light represents the new Lumias coming out.

What’s different, is the part in green:

Nokia Lumia users get free access

All you need to do is rock up, and show them you own a Lumia, and you’re in! Sounds like a good deal to me.

Are you in the Philippines? Planning on going to the event? Love to hear what you have to say in the comments below.

N9Apps: Easy Answer

Posted: 14 May 2012 09:15 PM PDT

Its been way too long since my last N9Apps post. I am going to try to do at least one a week. Now today’s app is called Easy Answer. It’s another one of those apps that just makes the N9 easier to use.

What does it do?
It runs in the background (if enabled) to make answering and ending calls so much easier. There are a few options for answering the call. These are:

  • On Ear: Raise the phone to your ear to answer the call’
  • Power Button: Double press power button to answer the call
  • Shaking: Shake the phone for a moment to answer a call

And, similarly, to end the call:

  • Power Button: Double press the power button to end the call
  • Shaking: Shake the phone to end the call.

It’s really simple. I have been using it for a few days now, and it makes it just that bit easier to receive/end calls on the device. Especially since I do this thing with my phone, where I spin it before placing it in my pocket, so the shake to end feature is really handy. I like seeing apps like this that take the whole “gesture” experience of the N9 so much further.

The app is sadly no longer on the store, but I have uploaded the deb file for everyone to enjoy. You can get it from here Update: Its back up on the Store.

If you have an N9App you love, feel free to send in a tip(email is best as I often don’t check the tips page or twitter) and I’ll take a look. Or even send in a review of your own!

Michael
