N9Apps: Eyrie – Music Detector Posted: 23 May 2012 06:10 PM PDT Many have wanted Shazam to come to MeeGo-Harmattan, and in true Maemo Community fashion, devs make alternatives. This is exactly what Eyrie is. Eyrie will listen to what music you’re playing, and after recording a 30 second sound clip, detects what the song is. It uses the EchoNest library, an open-source way of detecting a song’s “fingerprint”. Now, it’s still an early version, but seems promising. Its quick to launch, and is quick to tell you if it has failed or give you a result. The database for results can only be as large as EchoNest, so hopefully it will get better. The dev has posted a video of it working (see below). I tried it myself, comparing it to Shazam on my 800, using the same songs, and it got 1/4, where Shazam got 4/4. Admittedly though, Shazam has been around for a lot longer, and has had the time to improve its library. It’s still a great app, and it’s good to see developers take the initiative to bring these sort of apps the platform.
The app can be downloaded from the developer’s web site. Make sure you have allowed installation of 3rd party apps Source: Michael Sheldon |
SlashGear and Engadget’s Nokia 808 PureView Galleries Posted: 23 May 2012 06:00 PM PDT Engadget have brought together, what seems to be, their own sample pictures from the Nokia 808 PureView. I’m not quite sure who was tasked with taking the photos but they did decently enough. Going through the whole gallery, you can even see some of the 808 PureView team (though I don’t know how to look at anything beyond the compressed Engadget photos). Some shots look terrible, i.e. not even in focus. At the very worst, it could be the 808 having difficulty focusing. Let’s hope we don’t see that fiasco manifest itself in some people’s testing introducing human error, like it did with the N8 eh when the 808 is compared. Camera wise, I think everyone knows it’s all about the Nokia 808 PureView. There are other things important in smartphones too, but whilst we’re on the topic of just imaging, well that’s where the 808 comes out on top. A lot of the current crop of new gen competitor smartphones are having difficulty beating even the N8 so it won’t be too hard to guess how the 808 will do. Having said that, we still have not seen definitive comparisons to resolve just how much the 808 PureView has improved over the original N8.
They’ve got a gigapan box at the bottom so you can zoom in and check out the clarity of the photos yourself. You’ll need Flash/disable flashblock to see it. Oh hang on – SlashGear also has their own photos. Well, these ones look a whole lot better. For one, more are in focus. e.g. compare the cakes. Chris also takes the time to actually talk about his experiences with the camera. I can only see two lines of text in the first story linked. Chris has a good overview which you should definitely check out.
Great to hear that there’s little lag and that photo taking is real fast! Composition can vastly alter our perception of a good photo and thus a good camera. It takes a good eye for photos to produce some really beautiful images. It’s not merely just about having a really good camera. Having said that, it’s important that the camera you have can take great pictures in pretty much all conditions. Reliability is hugely important to me and knowing that I can take out the camera and produce a picture worth keeping is priceless. It’s no good to have photos looking great only some of the time. It is also important to me that should you want it to, your camera can give you the freedom to push your photography. I think the Nokia 808 is the best camera phone to offer that. Chris confirms that this is not the phone for Instagramers. Well, technically it is the best one if the app was available, but I get what he means. Why should Nokia try and create the Pure Quality only for people to crap it up with dozens of applied filters so the final image no longer resembles the photo you took? BTW I don’t know if it’s instagram or the quality of the phones taking the initial picture – sometimes the images look great when I see them as a thumbnail but look at the larger pic and they often look like trash. Perhaps if they had the N8/808 they could have that raw brilliance to work with/defile. I mentioned before that I think it’s great that Instagram is making people really interested in taking photos. What I think it is most brilliant at, however, is hiding the crappy quality and crappy shots. N8/808 quality not needed, just a potato. Here’s a quote you guys will love:
I’m a Nokia fan and although you might expect me to instantly love every Nokia product, I haven’t had a proper interest in a Symbian phone as big as this since the N8. Even then, along with my praises, I made my own reservations about possibly stepping down from Maemo.
But I think (hope) that Belle FP1 has got a lot of the key issues I had with Symbian fixed. The hardware is much faster and the benefit of such an amazing camera with a very usable Symbian phone is quite appealing to me. Cheers steelicon for the tip! |
Posted: 23 May 2012 04:00 PM PDT Another day, another appearance at Reddit for a Nokia. Yes it’s the old 3310 but yes too in that there’s a Nokia Lumia 900.
I sadly browse reddit too often when I take a study break so I can say that I rarely ever see any other phone making it to the front page as say, a Nokia. That’s because the Nokia 3310 (or old Nokias) have got a reputation and a meme of being indestructable. Of course they’re not but it’s just a running joke that a lot of people like to play along with. Most recently however, a recent Nokia appeared for other reasons. Siri was, first, calling the Nokia Lumia 900 the best smartphone. This was followed with more uproar as Siri was reported to have been patched, censoring the initial response back to some self praising. Either way, people were taking notice of the Nokia Lumia 900 more than they ever would. Colour me surprised again when I see it appear again, but it has now come full circle thanks to that video that showed off how strong it was. The Nokia Lumia 900 carries on the Nokia tradition of being a well built, well designed, sturdy phone. So it was inevitable for someone to make that connection that this is the 3310′s kid. Does the science and technicality behind this matter one bit? Does it matter if another phone may be able to replicate this feat? No. Not at all. This is just about enjoying that amusing legend of super strong Nokia phones being made relevant again with a current product.
I’m really enjoying the discussion and curiosity everyday folks are posing on Reddit. If you remember, the first time we were reporting Reddit related Nokia stories, we highlighted a lot of ignorance that Nokia for a long time has not been just about the disposable brick. It’s taking a while to get noticed but it’s better late than never. We can only hope Nokia can continue delivering sturdy phones which are sturdy because that is the Nokia quality (as opposed to being a rugged phone) and that we will finally see some slick designed super high end Nokia that can easily capture imaginations by the end of the year. Good Nokia reputation here, some slight Halo effect on perception of your other devices. This is why we need consistency. Less of the mediocre crap. Not everything has to be super high end, but what you make has to be best in category. There has to be at least one super phone. The flagbearer for Nokia. I’ve craved, wished, dreamed for such a thing but even now, nothing has materialised. There is only so much waiting. |
Lumiappaday #189: PAC-MAN Championship Edition DX demoed on the Nokia Lumia 800 XboxLive Posted: 23 May 2012 03:28 PM PDT We demoed the original PAC-MAN game in #180 and here is the Championship Edition DX.
As you’ll see in the video, it’s an interesting twist to the original. First the controls are much improved for touch – no more virtual joystick, just flick the direction you want. There’s also multitouch gestures to activate the ‘bomb’ as well as a different gameplay in that all the points you pick up aren’t immediately visible. It’s a decent game but it is outrageously priced. #189) PAC-MAN Championship Edition DX

Nokia 808 PureView available at Nokia Italy? Posted: 23 May 2012 02:07 PM PDT Filing this under ouch. The Nokia 808 PureView is priced at Nokia Italy, SIM Free at 599 EUROS. Approx 480GBP.
That’s a little more expensive than what we’ve heard for UAE. The price is listed at the same retailer we saw back in April. We had expected the price to come down a bit, like in UAE, but it seems to have stayed put in Italy.

Symbian Roadmap Redefined: FP1 IS Carla; N8 To get Both FP1 & FP2 Posted: 23 May 2012 05:47 AM PDT The following bit of information comes from NokiaLino.it- An Italian blogger who recently attended a Lumia 610/900 launch event in Italy; he got some very interesting pieces of information regarding practically all the current Handsets that were announced last February. The most interesting of which is the fact that “Nokia Carla” Which was supposed to be the successor to Nokia Belle is no longer a thing, apparently Belle FP1 is the same as what Nokia Carla could have been (with other changes maybe coming in FP2). The other interesting fact is that the N8 our beloved Retired Camera Phone king will be getting a “FP1 Lite” as Jay mentioned earlier today (lite obviously due to it’s ridiculously under-powered CPU- I still can’t get over the fact that the Asha 302 that I was playing with had more power- Insert Jeremy Clarkson shouting POWER!~); however he also mentioned that the N8 would get a second update or Belle FP2. FP1 on the N8 will mainly feature the new browser as well as the new Nokia social (maybe the new status bar notifications integration for messages?).
Here’s the original post (after running it through google translate)- whoever he was talking to seemed quite open about Nokias roadmap and plans:

Nokia World 2012 taking place earlier! September 5-6 + change in format. Posted: 23 May 2012 05:14 AM PDT Nokia World 2012, originally scheduled to take place in Finland, September 25-26 is taking place ahead of schedule!
The Helsinki Nokia World is taking place September 5th-6th instead! Also there’s a change in format. It won’t be the big single Nokia World event that it usually is, but various small ones. Hopefully this means that products from Nokia are coming ahead of schedule, as opposed to some being delayed and hence requiring Nokia World to be broken up not to delay products that are ready. This first event is INVITATION ONLY and will be for operator and retail partners. So, not for bloggers then.
More details, as just mentioned, will appear later (weeks and months).
This might be good and bad. At Nokia World, everything is always announced on Day 1. Nothing of interest happens day 2. There’s also that anticlimax of nothing coming after hoping for a surprise. What this means is that time and time again, some particular device will overshadow something else. This should mean more focused buzz on what they’re announcing. It could work really well to concentrate your efforts on a particular audience. Media and bloggers one side who can mingle with each other, retail partners and carriers on the other. They both mix with Nokia but with each other, they’re kinda like oil and water. In contrast, it could be bad in that there are less attendees – less excitement, less of a show. But Nokia World should not be about the show, but about the products. Hopefully this Nokia World is focused on delivering the best products. At the very worst, it’s bad because Nokia are keeping purse strings tight. BTW regarding devices, I would prefer to have big splashy devices instead of multiple mediocre ones please. This is what began our troubles in the first place. I hope we are seeing great devices in these mini intimate Nokia Worlds. It would be cool to have multiple Nokia Worlds at various regions all at the same time, so then really, the whole world can enjoy Nokia World locally as opposed to jetting off to one location and many people missing out. Yes it might mean that there’s less of the meet ups and networking – but more people get to see the Nokia products, which is really what we should care about. Update:

All new New Vertu Constellation Candy Launched Posted: 23 May 2012 02:29 AM PDT
Maybe I’m just not a fashionista to understand but these are looking rather tacky to me. This is the Vertu Constellation that now comes in tangarine, raspberry and mint green. Hmmm.
Well, I guess it might be bought for wives of very rich gentlemen. Cheers Prashant for the tip |
Nokia Belle FP1 and FP2 coming to Nokia N8 + v111.30.610 spotted on Navifirm for Nokia N8 Posted: 23 May 2012 02:20 AM PDT The above image shows a firmware update for the Nokia N8 seen in Spain at Navifirm. Looking closer, you can see it says 111.30.610. An unfamiliar firmware. (Cheers Antti for the screenshot). Well more updates are apparently on the way to the Nokia N8 in the shape of, not only Nokia Belle FP1, but also Nokia Belle FP2. This would be adapted to the N8′s weaker processor and will have the new 8.2 browser. Source: Nokialino Cheers Antti and Ilprincipo for the tip!

Custom Rom for Lumia 800 and Lumia 710 Posted: 23 May 2012 01:45 AM PDT
The post came up on my twitter feed this morning thanks to @Joaoluisc. It didn’t take too long and I’m not surprised at all. The first custom ROM for the Nokia Lumia 800 has been released, and apparently, the developer known as RainbowMod had released one for the 710 earlier. The ROM is a Tango FW, using the Chinese Variant. The latest custom ROM for both includes;
Of course, you need to be lucky and have the unlocked Qualcomm bootloader to flash this on the 800, but luckily, the 710 can be done regardless (IIRC). Head over to XDADevelopers forums to find out more. Source: WMPU
