Video: Nokia 603 vs Nokia 500 vs Nokia N8: comparison of performance

Posted: 03 May 2012 06:38 PM PDT

Here’s another video from   that compares the performances of the Nokia 500, Nokia N8 and Nokia 603. I was expecting the 603 to be the clear winner but it wasn’t always the case. I guess it was difficult to do the tests of speed simultaneously for all three devices, but even so, there are times that either the 500/N8 was able to accomplish a task faster. Overall, all very similar, but the trend is 603>N8>500

In terms of touch responsiveness, the 603 looks to respond to the finger input more readily. The other two stutter somewhat. The browsing/panning in 603 is much smoother. The jerkiness in N8/500 is unsettling.

I didn’t quite see the firmware (just skimmed the video), but the 603 is possibly FP1.

Leak/Fake: Apollo/WP8 on Nokia Lumia 900?

Posted: 03 May 2012 06:22 PM PDT

I’d recommend not putting any hopes on this actually being real.

On the screen it says Dev Locked and at the top it says Apollo V3.7. It wouldn’t be the hardest thing to do to insert an edited screenshot.

I don’t quite know what they were trying to achieve here. Is it me or is the keyboard a little skewed? What’s up with the buttons at the bottom being hidden? Where are the buttons on the side?

Possibly trying to be anonymous or it’s just a bad fake.

A comment posted this image showing bits being hidden.

Phone Arena notes MS’ WP Dev Summit next month and they could reveal Apollo by then. I hope not. Unless they can provide a device soon after, I don’t see the point of revealing Apollo only for features to be incorporated into competing devices. Not to mention that revealing features and then giving the devices 3 months later makes the initial announcement and excitement stale and out of date.

Webby Award for Swipe; Graphics Design of the Year award for Nokia Pure

Posted: 03 May 2012 04:11 PM PDT

Quick heads up as I’ve got tons of revision to be doing:

1) Nokia N9′s Swipe website wins a Webby Award, in Telecommunications category in the People’s Voice Winner section. (Some Huawei site took the actual Webby Award)

http://www.webbyawards.com/webbys/current.php?media_id=96&season=16

2) On a related note, Nokia Pure, the new font that breaks away from the old Nokia Sans wins a graphic design of the year award, 2012. Nokia Connects compares this to the Oscars of the design world.

UPDATE: Messaging Update Details: Windows Phone software (OS version 7.10.8773.98) “Tango”

Posted: 03 May 2012 11:09 AM PDT

To all WP users,

We currently know that Messaging, whether it is SMS or MMS (Picture, Video, Audio) is lacking on the current versions of WP that powers our devices. Messaging is currently lacking in 3 crucial areas:

-Not being able to send more than 1 picture at a time

-Not able to send Videos AT ALL

-Not able to send Audio (more on this later)

Now, many of us have heard that WP’s messaging capabilities will be expanded with the Tango update and this is true. The reason I am posting this is to provide a clear version number for Tango, set the expectation for the Messaging update and also link to instructions “From the horse’s mouth” as some say.

Which brings me to this:

Notes

  • To attach multiple pictures to a text message or to attach a video, voice note, or custom ringtone to a message, your phone must be running the latest version of Windows Phone software (OS version 7.10.8773.98). If your phone is running an earlier version of Windows Phone software, you can only attach one picture to a text or instant message. For information about software updates, see Phone updates FAQ.

Microsoft has a support page that details HOW to send messages via the updated Messaging portion of the latest WP version “Tango”/8773. I figured it would be useful to share the guide as some of us may soon have Tango on our devices officially OR some of us my grab the update in unofficial ways by installing various .cab files onto our device (See here).

But wait, there’s more!!!!

I ran into a situation where I needed to send an audio file to my wife this morning. Knowing that the version of WP on my Lumia (8107) DOES NOT support the sending of Audio via MMS/Messaging, I recorded the audio with my N8 and sent it from there as I have 2 active SIMs.

Sitting around pretty upset that MS didn’t include full MMS support (iPhone started out with NO MMS, not even pictures), I decided to send the MMS from my N8 to my Lumia 710 just to see what would happen…….

Well, to all the surprises in the world, not only did my Lumia 710 receive the Audio MMS but it was able to play it, even with a simple interface!!!!!! I couldn’t believe it! Not only that, I was able to SEND the MMS from the 710 back to the N8 and the file was still playable in the original format!

Audio MMS received on the Lumia 710, 2 of 3 Success Rate!

So I tested a few recordings from the default Symbian Recorder and here are the results.

1. AMR file – Received on Lumia, played, sent back to N8, played on N8. SUCCESSFUL

2. WAV file - Received on Lumia, played, sent back to N8, played on N8.  SUCCESSFUL

3. MP3 file – NOT Received due to file size restriction. Failed (need smaller file size?)

MMS Audio playback on the Lumia 710.

MMS received on the Nokia N8.

Now, there ISN’T a way to CREATE a MMS Audio/Video message in the current WP 7.5 Mango OS, which brings us back to the Tango update. It appears that Mango has had some form of advanced MMS (I haven’t tried video yet, but I’m guessing it would be 3GPP or lower quality) over what MS has announced.

My question is: What has been the hold up, if the OS is capable of sending and receiving MMS AND playing the files? I am seriously asking. Does anyone out there know what is the current limitation? Is it UI related, as in Microsoft was waiting to complete the MMS UI? Is it codec/API based?

Have any of you ever sent Audio or Video via MMS with your WP beyond what Mango is specified as capable of doing? Is there a MMS app that offers the sending of Audio, Video or multiple pictures?

Either way, it was fun reading up on the future Tango updates and sending the MMS and being totally surprised. Now I know, without Tango, I can at least get audio from my wife and kids, and that means a lot to me.

Let us know what you think in the Comments Section.

As always, thank you for choosing MyNokiaBlog.

UPDATE: Video Messaging works as well!

I sent a 3gp video from my N8 to my Lumia 710 and it was received, it played in the standard WP video player and I was able to send it and play it back on the N8!

MMS 3gp Video received and sent on Lumia 710.

MMS 3gp Video playback on Lumia 710.

MMS 3gp video received and playback on the Nokia N8.

Yes, I like Fruit Loops…

Incredible Panorama with Nokia 808 PureView – insane detail again.

Posted: 03 May 2012 09:27 AM PDT

Check this out: It’s a super cool panorama by the Nokia 808 PureView.  It’s an interactive panorama allowing you to pan and zoom the image. The detail is insane as usual. The fused image was apparently so large the flash file had to be reduced so on the real sized images, you’d see things of even greater detail. A little like this post; http://mynokiablog.com/2012/04/02/wow-nokia-808-pureview-sample-pictures-from-china-crazy-detail/.

The panos have been previously done with a DSLR. How do you think the 808 stacks up? :)

The panorama from the pier is based on nine images taken with mobile phone! With the ability to keep as many pixels per frame is made very large images it is possible to zoom in on the screen.

It collects information on the image sensor than the eye can see. In fact, the fused image so large that we had to reduce it before we made the flash file you look at the top of the article.

Again, no amount of fancy burst shot mode is going to get photos this good.

Lumiappaday #170: Fruit Ninja demoed on the Nokia Lumia 800 XboxLive

Posted: 03 May 2012 08:22 AM PDT

Fruit Ninja needs little or no introduction, being on pretty much every platform now, including a very physically demanding kinect. It has been on WP for a while, but it was priced way too high. Recently a bunch of those games have come down to £0.79 which makes this game a must have download to your inventory.

It’s all about fruit swiping. There are three modes present, Normal (cut fruit, avoid bombs and missing fruit), a timed attack mode and a point gainer mode (bombs don’t mean game over, just point deduction)

Video: Nokia 808 PureView Time-Lapse Film – Original images, no photo editing

Posted: 03 May 2012 03:23 AM PDT

Here’s a Nokia 808 PureView made timelapse. In it you’ll see some photo zooming that we wished Nokia would do in their promos, like seeing the name, ‘Jimbo’ zoomed in from so far.

http://mynokiablog.com/2012/02/27/official-untouched-nokia-808-sample-pics-zoom-in-and-enhance/

If you’ve never seen these images before, it’s kind of a mind blower when you suddenly see detail you never expected. No amount of fancy burst shot mode with rewinding tool will get you this detail and clarity. I never noticed the pair of sunglasses there before.

Project N955 – Turn your N9 into an N950, sort of (w/ Video)

Posted: 03 May 2012 12:18 AM PDT

Just saw this on TMO during a Uni break. There is this thing called Project N955. The aim of the project is to turn an N9 into an N950. It isn’t the most elegant, or perfect solution, but it works.

HtheB posted his process as follows;

I bought a cheap iPhone bluetooth slide-case, and a cheap N9 case on eBay.

I unscrewed the case to get rid of the iPhone case, to just have the bluetooth keyboard with the slider.

Then, I just made holes in the cheap N9-case and screwed the slider on it.

Turn on the device, pair them and the result: N9 with a keyboard!

So essentially, all this “mod” is, is swapping out the iPhone case on a BT keyboard, for the N9 case. There are still drawbacks, like being able to hide the VKBD while using the BT keyboard, but that is being worked on. There have been posts in the past (don’t remember where I saw them), where the community was trying to get these keyboards made specifically for the N9. At the moment, this is the best solution.

He has posted several photos as well as a video. Take a look below.

Accessories: Nokia Play 360 Blue, NFC speaker unboxing, demoed with Nokia N9 (+Gallery).

Posted: 03 May 2012 12:01 AM PDT

I’ve been itching for one of these for a long, long time but Nokia UK/Nokia Connects didn’t (and still don’t) have any trial units. Fortunately Nokia Australia had one for Michael – you might have seen his post back in February:

http://mynokiablog.com/2012/02/10/accessories-nokia-play-360-speaker/

That was based on two weeks of use.

Well, last week I got contacted by Katie who’s working on something called ‘Best British Bloggers’ and wanted us to take a look at some accessories from www.phones4u.co.uk, one of the major UK mobile phone retailers. Thanks Katie!

http://www.phones4uaccessories.com/11523/product.htm

I was so excited to see the Play 360 on their list. I’ve only had a brief try of these myself at Nokia events, and yesterday at 6am, the postman brought this mystery package in (I wasn’t sure what it could be at the time as I was expecting another similarly sized box).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xJNvKNGmE-k

I really wanted to get two to try out the stereo thing, but they could only do one unit per person. You can also find these on Amazon.

Nokia Play 360 Black - £87.82
Nokia Play 360 White - £107.88
Nokia Play 360 Blue - £119.99

I picked Blue due to it matching the Cyan pair of Monsters I had last week, and of course the Cyan N9.

http://mynokiablog.com/2012/04/28/accessories-nokia-purity-hd-cyan-monster-with-nokia-n9-huge-gallery/

Here’s an unboxing and a quick demo again for you guys. This was unboxed yesterday but it took absolutely forever to process (5h -__-) and upload  (estimated 3h) so it’s appearing today instead :) .

Quick summary of below: I’m really surprised and pleased by how well this works and how good it sounds. I’ve demoed this with the N9 but it works with all bluetooth music capable devices, and those with NFC give it a quick initial pairing touch.

The speakers are quite something. I’ve not had much time with it but all my housemates are impressed, with the volume, the clarity, the bass and how it can just connect by tapping. With the latter, the NFC tapping actually works very well when done properly. Just bring the N9 over to the label that says NFC and tap. I did this wrong the first time in the unboxing as the NFC positioning has to be right and I was not allowing them to make proper contact. You can also see in that video later, how quick NFC connects (and it’s this quick on my subsequent attempts). But without NFC, pairing is also simple. Just hold for 1.5s on the BT button, find and click connect. Subsequent attempts, you can just press the BT button.

For small(ish) portable speakers, it really does pack a punch. I may not use it much around the house as I already have some speakers set up, but when travelling, or having a BBQ outside, or going to the park etc this is absolutely perfect. Pretty much anyone can connect to it and share their music as long as they have bluetooth (that can send music) or 3.5mm jack

They feel great. They’re weighty, but not too light or too heavy. The main body is a cold blue metal.  This is studded with what looks like a speaker grille though the sound does not come out of the side but out of the top.

The top is a cloth material and the bottom is plastic.

The base has a rubber ring to help grip onto surfaces.

There are four buttons in total.  At the front,  (volume +/-), one bluetooth button  (which lights up white when on, blue when connected and pulses blue when trying to pair/find bluetooth device). There’s also a charging light. This is red when charging and turns off when charged.

On/Off button at the back along with the microUSB port and 3.5mm port.

This comes with a pouch that is lined blue on the inside.

It doesn’t fully cover the Play 360 though that does mean it can still be used when in the case (if  you put it in upright with the material bit exposed).

It goes really well with the Cyan N9

BTW, this works for audio of everything except calls. That’s games, incoming messages (which can be read) the keyboard tapping, videos etc. It’s consistent that it will slowly increase the volume of incoming BT transmission as opposed to just suddenly being blaringly loud – this is most useful when playing music and it not suddenly shocking you.

This is a rather loud speaker, definitely enough to fill a room without having to put on maximum volume (yet whilst on max volume, it is not distorted – but make sure the music source is of decent quality).  Very excellent job, Nokia Accesories folks!
