Nokia 808 PureView Manual and BV-4D battery

Posted: 02 May 2012 05:07 PM PDT

I just posted earlier that the Nokia 808 PureView passed ANATEL certification and mentioned that there was a manual available but I couldn’t open the link. It wouldn’t work on Chrome/Safari so I thought it might just be the site but Recruta advised using FireFox and voila. Apparently it also works in IE9. I wonder why Chrome/Safari wouldn’t open it :/.

http://sistemas.anatel.gov.br/sgch/Consulta/Homologacao/MontaListaArquivos.asp?NumRfgct=113012

I find that manuals are most exciting to read when you don’t actually have the product. Why? Anticipation of owning one and gleaning any info from it :) . The manual of course is how the 808 was first seen, and at the time it was thought to be a hoax.

This is a very basic manual, with minimal to zero useful information for the end user. All the diagrams that would show the UI are not present. However, it does note some things such as requiring class 6 microSD for 1080p video.

Oh there’s another document showing some photos (no internal ones yet) but you can see the battery, BV-4D. Easily user replaceable, and one ups even the N8 on this regard.

Cheers Recruta for the tip!

Video: Nokia Lumia Challenge – Episode 2: Find the latest football scores

Posted: 02 May 2012 04:15 PM PDT

Saw this yesterday and I still have no reaction to this. I don’t know about you but I’m very much bored of this Lumia Challenge already. The most interesting part is the presenter, Technoillusionist, Marco Tempest where he wiggles his untied shoelaces that then seem to tie themselves. There’s a new change at the end where the catchphrase is now ‘upgraded to a Lumia’ and the guy at the end got a new Lumia 800. Other than that, this was just a sketch to demo the ESPN app.

Who approved this? They should have just turned this into an Amazing Everyday with Marco just doing his thing, pleasing the crowd as an amazing everyday. No need to bring up rival phones anymore.

Nokia 808 PureView passes ANATEL certification process

Posted: 02 May 2012 04:10 PM PDT

Apparently the Nokia 808 PureView has passed the ANATEL certification process. There are documents that could potentially be checked out if you can actually open the site, but it keeps doing a silly pop up and nothing will load for me.

It was rather infuriating, quite reminiscent of those prank websites where the damn pop up would keep appearing over and over and over no matter how many damn times you clicked it. Shame as there seems to be a manual there.

As a follow up, someone who did manage to open that site added:

It seems that the Nokia 808 Pure View will be manufactured in the following factories, according to the Anatel document found on the website I've indicated above:

Besides Nokia Mobile Phones – In Joensuunkatu 7 FIN-24100 – Salo, Finland, the document says it will be assembled in the following factories:

BRAZIL =>
a) Nokia do Brasil Tecnologia Ltda. – Localização: Av. Torquato Tapajós, Km 12. nº 7200 – Colônia Terra Nova– Manaus –
AM – CNPJ: 02.140.198/0001-34

CHINA =>
b) Nokia Telecomunications Ltd. – BDA Building 1, nº5 DongHuan Zhong Road – Beijing Economic & Technological
Development Area, CN-100176 Beijing – China.

CHINA =>
c) Nokia Telecomunications Ltd. – Keji Road Nancheng High-Tech Industrial Park, CN-523129 – Dongguan – China.

http://sistemas.anatel.gov.br/sgch/Consulta/Homologacao/MontaListaArquivos.asp?NumRfgct=113012

Hope it will be made in huge numbers and consumers will demand the 808.

Cheers Recruta for the tip.

Ollila: Nokia was too slow, but now will deliver products on time – suggests hybrid smartphone/tablet.

Posted: 02 May 2012 04:00 PM PDT

Here’s an interesting read from Ollila if this is true. Ollila accepts that Nokia missed the boat when it came to smartphones in 2008. Despite inventing the smartphone and being on top, Nokia was unable to adapt to the new pressures of the new smartphone paradigm quickly enough. Nokia was just too slow.

I mentioned before that Nokia must focus now on products, on customer satisfaction, on timely products. The right products at the right time.

Ollila says that Nokia will produce on time and makes a mention of hybrid devices.

Ollila said that Nokia will publish its range of flat screen computers and smart phones like the hybrid devices.

The smartphone/pc (tablet?) hybrid has been seen already in the Galaxy Note. At first that product seemed too unwieldy for some, and it still is. But there’s definitely a market for screens that big. I’m afraid Nokia might be too afraid and try to play the safe/boring game. Can Nokia actually bring a proper hybrid as opposed to simply being a big screened smartphone?

Free On-Ear Monster Purities with Lumia 800 in UK

Posted: 02 May 2012 09:29 AM PDT

Probably the deal of the year when it comes to Nokia devices (short of the free Lumia 900s); now with every new purchase of a Lumia 800 in the UK you get a free pair of Monster On-Ear heaphones (check out Jay’s Unboxing gallery); take it from me these things are beautiful and super stylish.

Just wondering how much money is Nokia losing on these? they seem to be pretty premium headsets, def not cheap priced at 200 pounds; HTC had a similar deal giving free Beats with their Sensation devices, only catch was that they added the price of the beats to the actual device (effectively making each phone cost around $600). But Nokia don’t seem to have upped the price so what’s the deal? Could they be clearing stock for the “Nokia Reaction Headset” whatever that is?

Nokia Press: Patent Infringements and Carl Zeiss

Posted: 02 May 2012 07:08 AM PDT

Two things that have gone up recently at Nokia Press relate to patent infringements, and also the Carl Zeiss-Nokia partnership. First up, let’s look at the patent infringements.

Nokia are claiming that HTC and Viewsonic have infringed on their patents in the US, and that HTC and RIM have infringed patents in Dusseldorf, Germany, with all three OEMs infringing in Munich. “In total, 45 Nokia patents are in suit in one or more of the actions”. It doesn’t say directly what the violations are, but claim that

proprietary innovations protected by these patents are being used by the companies to enable hardware capabilities such as dual function antennas, power management and multimode radios, as well as to enhance software features including application stores, multitasking, navigation, conversational message display, dynamic menus, data encryption and retrieval of email attachments on a mobile device.

have been used without consent. The only thing I can think of is the new BB10 reminding me of Harmattan a little bit, or the One X have te polycarbonate body. That’s nothing to take legal action against. (Or are times that tough?) Nokia are stating that they would;

rather that other companies respect our intellectual property and compete using their own innovations, but as these actions show, we will not tolerate the unauthorized use of our inventions.

In regards to the Carl Zeiss Nokia partnership, Nokia are saying it has been “extended”, which essentially just means that the great imaging technology will come to Lumia stronger than before. This s supported by Nokia themselves, in saying

“Carl Zeiss was a crucial partner in the creation of the first PureView experience,” said Jo Harlow, executive vice president of Nokia Smart Devices. “The benefits of our ongoing collaboration will be more PureView innovation and further advancements in smartphone imaging in the coming months and years.”

Reading that, I can only see one thing. Nokia Lumia PureView to be announced at Nokia World, if not earlier. Coming months for Nokia is usually 5-6, which fits Nokia World’s dates of end of September. Having a good feeling about this year. Nokia just need to make sure they blow everyone out of the park at NW2012, otherwise it will be a huge let down and even harder for them to climb back to power.

A post was also released about the 808 PureView’s roll out, which was covered here

Wazapp on N9/N950 has been delayed

Posted: 02 May 2012 06:29 AM PDT

Huge uproar has been flooding TMO as N9 owners have been waiting for the release of the community port of WhatsApp, Wazapp, said to be released May 1. There was speculation it was all done just to get donations and scam people.

The developer has recently posted this on the thread at TMO

Hi, I just want to clarify something. Basically the only reason I set May 1 as a release date, wasn’t because the app was ready to be released, actually I had tons of bugs and work to do to make it actually usable by public without sucking. The only reason I set that date as a target was to force myself to fix all those issues before May 1, because otherwise it would have taken me like another month to do so. And I did fix all the issues I intended to fix on time, and was fully aiming to release a beta at that date. However when it came to testing a real scenario that included registration (which I rarely test) more things came up causing the delay. One of the things for example is that whatsapp registration code via SMS for some reason takes A LOT of time to arrive (I requested one yesterday which hasn’t arrived yet), which makes me think of adding voice request as a fallback registration method.

So yes maybe I shouldn’t have announced May 1 as a release date unless I was sure about it, but if I haven’t done so, it most probably would have been next month or something, while right now it should take only some hours of work to get it ready. But anyway I owe you an apology for not releasing it at that date and I hope no one is still mad at me

http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p=1200695&postcount=959

I certainly don’t mine waiting longer, if it means the app is less buggy/more feature packed. Some people were forgetting that this dev has done all the work himself and without him, there wouldn’t be WhatsApp on Harmattan. More people need to grateful.

Just thought I’d give you guys a heads up. Will post as soon as it is released.

Michael

Lumiappaday #169: Need For Speed – Undercover demoed on the Nokia Lumia 800 XboxLive

Posted: 02 May 2012 06:17 AM PDT

Need For Speed Undercover is the older NFS game but it’s the version I prefer playing. There’s also NFS Hot Pursuit. I like that the controls are extremely responsive and that the visuals on the display orientate themselves to always be horizontal in my view. i.e. If I tilt right, the game visuals turn left to compensate and your view of the game remains unchanged, allowing your eyes to concentrate solely on driving your car.

The game looks great and plays very well. I’ve only used the demo for this because I didn’t fancy shelling out £3.99 for this, especially as it’s much cheaper (around £2.29) on equivalent stores.

Due to the nature of the recording set up, it was very hard to record this accelerometer based game on camera. It is much easier to play when you hold the phone normally.

Nokia confirms 808 Pureview for May! Happy Nokia 808 PureView Month :)

Posted: 02 May 2012 03:20 AM PDT

Yesterday, we got excited about May being the month of arrival for the pixel punching Nokia 808 PureView. But we were ever so slightly concerned that there was the smallest possibility of delay and it might not arrive in May.

http://press.nokia.com/2012/05/02/nokia-to-begin-rolling-out-award-winning-nokia-808-pureview-in-may/

Well, fear not. Nokia has confirmed May again in a press release! Happy Nokia 808 PureView Month again :)

Nokia today confirmed that the Nokia 808 PureView will start rolling out in select markets in May. The Nokia 808 PureView is the first smartphone to feature Nokia’s award-winning PureView technology. PureView represents Nokia’s highest level smartphone imaging experiences, bringing together high-performance sensors, exclusive Carl Zeiss optics, and Nokia developed imaging algorithms. The first markets to begin selling the Nokia 808 PureView include Russia and India.

Nokia to begin rolling out award-winning Nokia 808 PureView in May

Since its launch in February, the Nokia 808 PureView has receivedmultiple awards, including Best Mobile Device at Mobile World Congress 2012, as well as an award for Best Imaging Innovation for 2012 from the Technical Image Press Association (TIPA).

Nokia 808 PureView“PureView has completely raised the bar on imaging performance for the whole smartphone industry – and Nokia is not stopping here,” said Jo Harlow, Head of Smart Devices at Nokia. “We’re going to carry on developing PureView for our future smartphones in ways that will again revolutionize the imaging experience.”

The Nokia 808 PureView features a large, high-resolution 41 megapixel sensor with high-performance Carl Zeiss optics and new pixel oversampling technology. At standard resolutions (2/3, 5 and 8 megapixels) this means the ability to zoom without loss of clarity and capture seven pixels of information, condensing into one pixel for the sharpest images imaginable. At high-resolution (38 megapixels maximum) it means the ability to capture an image, then zoom, reframe, crop and resize afterwards to expose previously unseen levels of details. With superior low-light performance and the ability to save in compact file sizes for sharing in email, MMS, and on social networks, the Nokia 808 PureView makes it possible for anyone to capture professional looking images in any conditions.

In addition to superior still imaging technology, the Nokia 808 PureView also includes full HD 1080p video recording and playback with 4X lossless zoom and the world’s first use of Nokia Rich Recording.  Rich Recording enables audio recording at CD-like levels of quality, previously only possible with external microphones. The Nokia 808 PureView also features exclusive Dolby Headphone technology, transforming stereo content into a personal surround sound experience over any headphones and Dolby Digital Plus for 5.1 channel surround sound playback.
