Huawei Emotion UI for Android Coming in July, Detailed Next Week Posted: 28 May 2012 12:12 PM PDT We’ve seen the Acer Ring UI, Motorola’s Motoblur, Samsung’s TouchWiz and recently LG showed the world its new Optimus UI. Now Huawei has the Emotion UI to lay on top of Android and they’re ready to showcase it on June 9th, with a release in July. This Sense/TouchWiz rival comes straight after another Chinese company, ZTE announced its 3D skin for Android, based on Rightware’s Kanzi UI tech. Android 4.0 is most likely the target for the Emotion UI, but details are lacking at this point. I’m curious if this UI will come as an update to already shipping Android devices, or maybe it will be preinstalled on newcomer models. What’s certain is that all Huawei Android devices shipping after July will get it. Among those I must mention the Ascend D quad, the flagship from Huawei this year and a model that has been delayed till July. That may have been done to have time to get the Emotion UI on it. Huawei describes its solution as “emotional”, “simple” and “smart”, stopping at this when it comes to details. The picture above only shows what looks like a standard and stock ICS interface, so nothing’s changed. If this is as subtle as the customization Sony did on the Xperia S Android 4.0 update, it’ll be OK… Related posts: |
Facebook Hires Former Apple Engineers to Come Up With the Next Big Smartphone Posted: 28 May 2012 11:16 AM PDT Facebook seems to be affected by the fact that it’s seen as just a social networking service, although that’s a big deal in itself. Now they want to matter as a brand of hardware, so they’re into the whole Facebook Phone thing again. This time they’ve got a valuable asset on their side: a bunch of former Apple engineers. The New York Times claims that FB engineers are working on a project codenamed Buffy, that’s supposed to involve more than half a dozen former Apple software and hardware engineers. They previously worked on the iPhone and there’s even on who had to do with the iPad. One Facebook employee is quoted by the Times as saying that Zuckerberg is worried that soon FB will be seen as simply an app on other mobile platforms, unless he comes with a mobile phone soon enough. Previously Digitimes had a scoop saying that Facebook and HTC are working together on a new handset with a platform exclusive to Facebook. This would be the third attempt to create a Facebook phone and I can’t say that previous ones were failures, but they didn’t have that little bit of something special to make them sell millions. Facebook apparently contracted a hardware maker and engineers to come up with an appealing design and batch of components. With Instagram in the mix and the recent rumors about purchasing Opera, things could get really complicated really soon, maybe even involving a Facebook OS. Related posts: |
LG Announces 5 Inch 1080p Display, Kills Retina Display With 440 Ppi Density Posted: 28 May 2012 01:59 AM PDT LG Display just took a major step in helping LG conquer the mobile market today, by announcing a 5 inch 1080p display, with incredible 440 ppi pixel density. This will make a killer screen for a Galaxy Note rival, maybe LG Optimus Vu 2, considering the diagonal of the new panel. The new panel has a 16:9 aspect ratio and it’s designed with HD content in mind. It relies on Advanced High Performance In-Plane Switching (AH-IPS), said to provide wide viewing angles, fast response time and great brightness. It also consumes less power than its predecessors. LG is saying that the 5 inch 1080p panel will make it to production in the second half of the year, so by 2013 we might even see a 1080p screen smartphone. This means that the quality of your Full HD TVs will be brought to the 5 inch devices, so you’ll be able to forget all consoles and big screens and have the gaming of your life time on a tiny smartphone. This model is 0.5 inches larger, 2.2 times denser in pixels and 1.3 times more advanced in ppi than its predecessor, a 4.5 inch panel at 329 ppi and 1280 x 720. I’m sure that Samsung has a Super AMOLED Plus panel with similar abilities ready to burst onto the market, since they won’t allow their biggest local rival to surpass them… Related posts: |
Android 4.0 ICS on Xperia S Demo Unveiled (Video) Posted: 28 May 2012 01:32 AM PDT Most of the 2011 Xperia models have received Android 4.0 ICS updates one way or the other, so now it’s the turn of the 2012 Xperias to get it. The first that comes to mind is the Xperia S and last I heard Sony confirmed that the users will have to wait till the end of June to receive the latest Android. Luckily we now have a full video detailing the new experience through a walkthrough. Although the video below is in a foreign language, you’ll notice the experience on the handset and the changes of interface the new Android brings. You can now access the camera from the lockscreen, but that may not matter much, since we already have a physical button for quick camera access. I can also spot a new widget or two and the music player seems to be the Walkman player from the recently announced Xperia SX and GX units in Japan. The widget screen flows vertically now we get a glance at the time/alarm area, an interesting Gmail widget and the notification area. As you can see we have new sliders for connectivity, or at least new graphics for them. The main background is still black with white writing and the sliders are blue. Basically, the experience is pretty much the same and the applications area is exactly the same, so I can’t really say this update is earth shattering for people used to the Gingerbread Xperia S. The equalizer from the music player looks kickass, I’ll admit. The photo gallery has also been tweaked for extra efficiency. Related posts: |
