Microsoft Preparing a Service to Migrate Android Apps to New Windows Phone Posted: 17 May 2012 04:34 PM PDT Strange as it may seem, Microsoft is preparing a very interesting service that allows you to migrate apps and app data between different mobile OSes. This is according to a patent application filed back in November 2010. It appears that MS will provide a service that will analyze the apps you have installed on an Android device for example and then search for similar ones in the Marketplace. Since I think you know where I’m going with this, let me just say it: Microsoft will let you buy and install those exact same apps that you had on Android with a single click, so you can restore your previous experience on another device with another OS. If there’s no corresponding app in the Marketplace you’ll get suggestions for third party alternatives. If the app simply has no alternative, the service remembers this and will notify you in the future as soon as something similar appears. The Redmond company also envisions a solution that would migrate the app data to your new Windows Phone from the previous platform, with the apps installation included. The problem here is a very common restriction: one OS can’t access other platform’s application data, at least not in the official form. The jailbroken and hacked platforms probably allow it… Anyway, MS has a great idea, but let’s see it turned into something real, before being too happy about it… Related posts: |
Hands on Time With the First 2 GB RAM Phone: LG Optimus LTE 2 Handled, Optimus UI 3.0 Too (Video) Posted: 17 May 2012 11:43 AM PDT You must’ve heard that only hours after the Samsung Galaxy S III was launched LG went ahead and announced its very own new flagship, the LG Optimus LTE 2. This model has a great appeal, because it’s the first handset with 2GB of RAM. Anyway, you must know that the handset was officially showcased in South Korea, during an event where the folks of The Verge were present. They brought back some interesting hands on time with the phone, that reveals the brand new Optimus UI 3.0 created by LG. This is actually a skin layered on top of Android 4.0 and it offers some original features, such as the unlock screen that resembles the one in Honeycomb a bit, plus new transitions between Home screens and fresh widgets. Also, there’s a new action involving the press of the two volume buttons at the same time to trigger a notes app, that allows you to write directly on the screen, no matter what else you’re doing. As far as the phone goes, LG Optimus LTE 2 is a 4.7 inch IPS screen device with a 720p resolution, 2 GB of RAM, Android 4.0 and a Qualcomm S4 MSM8960 processor at 1.5 GHz. Under the hood there’s a 2.150 mAh battery and LG promises to offer 10 hours of talk time with its aid. The smartphone weighs 145 grams, measures 8.9 mm in thickness and looks pretty hot to me. At the back we have an 8 megapixel camera with voice control, a similar feature as the one present on Galaxy S III. Related posts: |
Samsung Galaxy S III 2GB RAM Version Coming to Japan Posted: 17 May 2012 04:50 AM PDT If you thought that the LG Optimus LTE2 was amazing, with its 2GB of RAM, now it appears that the Samsung Galaxy S III will also get a version with 2GB of RAM. Just like it happened last year to the HD display Galaxy S II, the handset will be coming to Japan first and hopefully it will also launch in other countries. Samsung is trying to compete with LG, that actually launched their 2GB phone in order to compete with the Galaxy S III. Funny, isn’t it? I guess Samsung won’t forgive themselves for allowing LG to enter the Guinness Book of records with the LG Optimus 2X for being the first dual core phone, so now they want to spoil every premiere they have. Also, in case one of the South Korean companies has a technology the other one doesn’t, there’s always industrial espionage, that’s a big thing in Asia, as far as I’ve heard. Samsung’s latest flagship is starting to get more varied versions, so right now we have the quad core Exynos one, the dual core Snapdragon S4 one for the USA, with 4G LTE and this one with 2GB of RAM. The model number will be SC-06D for the smarpthone with extra RAM and it will come sometime in June and keep the Exynos chipset. It will also have 32GB of storage. Related posts: |
LG Optimus LTE2 Shipping in Korea this Week, Couple More Specs Unveiled Posted: 17 May 2012 03:14 AM PDT LG’s Optimus LTE2 made the headlines when it was announced the same day as the Galaxy S III, since it had the upper hand on the RAM side. This is actually the first handset packing 2GB of RAM and LG is certainly one to love premiere. After all, they’re in the Guinness Book of Records for releasing the first dual core phone ever, Optimus 2X. Now they’re doing it again with the 2GB RAM phone, that will actually ship in Korea this week. On this occasion we also found out more specs, since when this model was announced everything was hush-hush and not so many features appeared online. Optimus LTE2 comes with a 4.7 inch True HD IPS LCD screen, an 8 megapixel camera and dual core 1.5 GHz processor. The latter 2 specs were also present on the predecessor of this model. The weight has increased by 10 grams, most likely because of the 2,150 mAh battery. This handset also supports wireless charging and relies on the Optimus UI 3.0 new interface, that brings some interesting new features, such as drag anywhere lock screen, icon customizer, a new pattern lock and a voice shutter for taking pics with voice command. Huawei Ascend D1 Reaches the FCC, Reveals Appealing Specs Posted: 17 May 2012 01:04 AM PDT One of the first devices unveiled at MWC 2012 was Huawei’s Ascend D1, since the company was the first to have a press conference in Barcelona. Now this model has arrived at the FCC for testing purposes and it reveals its specifications in full. Huawei Ascend D1 features a 4.5 inch 720p Super IPS+ LCD screen with an impressive pixel density of 326 ppi, that allows it to enter Retina level. The Huawei smartphone features a dual core 1.5 GHz TI OMAP 4460 processor, 1 GB of RAM and 8 GB of storage inside. FCC also mentions that there’s a microSD slot on board with 32GB capacity. At the back we have an 8 megapixel camera with dual LED flash, able to capture 720p videos. At the front we find a 1.3 megapixel camera for video calling. The Huawei Ascend D1 runs Android 4.0 ICS straight out of the box and provides quadband GSM and pentaband HSPA+/WCDMA connectivity. This means that the unlocked version of the phone will work on AT&T and T-Mobile without hassle. We have no information about which carriers will get this phone, but at least we know it’s compatible with two of the most important operators. Related posts: |
