Nokia ProTip: Bring Nokia 808 PureView everywhere!

Posted: 08 May 2012 04:43 PM PDT

Just a quick suggestion before I go to bed. Nokia, why not bring the Nokia 808 PureView everywhere? I completely understand your direction to go with Lumia. PureView is groundbreaking mobile imaging. Right now it’s on the Nokia 808. Based on current information, there is no possibility of PureView or anything remotely close reaching Lumia until 2013.

Why not treat the world to PureView on the 808 until then? Belle FP1 is certainly nice enough in demoes to handle everyday usage – in all areas perhaps except apps but it covers the major bases. Make it clear if you have to that this is NOT Lumia. Consumers seem excited about the PureView. Some are hesitant due to Symbian but at least let them try. If they need to criticise that portion, let them. Perhaps they might find redeeming qualities there too. Certainly one thing I have no doubt everyone will fall in love with is the camera.

Isn’t this what you want to drive to future products, including the Lumia range? Why not give a taster of that. Show off how good your PureView really is by getting it into people’s hands. Like CBD. Let it be known by getting it in the hands of more consumers the merits of your work.

Could it cannibalise Lumia sales? Perhaps. So what? If the sales inevitably go to Nokia and reputation build on both Nokia and PureView. It might make some marketing direction difficult as you seem all about tiles, but so what? Marketing people need to think up of something creative. In the long term, sales to Nokia gives more breathing room for Nokia to execute their Lumia strategy (as well as the other things they have lined up for us but can’t don’t talk about).

I can understand that it might seem more difficult to keep people in the Nokia system long term – after 808, nothing ties these people to your ‘ecosystem’ unlike the Lumia’s one. Well PureView might. Once you’re used to that level of mobile photography, you just can’t go back to using anything less, and anytime you do you feel pangs of regret and shame for your crappy non-PureView photos. The non-PureView photo might actually be potato level crappy or perhaps decent but the 808 makes it look like a potato took the shot. Let consumers experience this.

I really don’t want to hear news that Nokia 808 PureView not coming to such and such. Perhaps even in the US they should see PureView too? Both the Lumia range and 808 PureView have DISTINCT redeeming qualities.

Would there be some major logistics problem? Would you lose money in the long run? What is the rationale for not bringing PureView in the shape of the 808 to consumers when PureView on your other platforms is too far away? Can you get the carriers to approve of the 808 too? Unless there’s still some deep rooted Symbian problem that would be detrimental to the users experience of the Nokia 808 (and hence why you might want to limit its availability) I can’t quite see why users shouldn’t have the option. At the very least, be transparent about the shortcomings so consumers make a full informed decision when buying it.

808 everywhere gives time for the other Nokia strategies to mature properly, and in time when Lumia gets many of the features users have been wanting from Symbian, then perhaps they would actively choose the Lumia instead of being forced it as the only option.  Clearly we’re still having difficulty bringing Lumia everywhere. Either way, sales go to Nokia.

Video: Smoked by Nokia Lumia Challenge feat. KC Montero -_- zzz +Rant/Suggestion

Posted: 08 May 2012 04:00 PM PDT

Seems Nokia really wants to drag this smoked by Lumia/WP thing out. As I’ve expressed before, I am already very tired of this campaign – it was fun at first but it’s boring now and the smugness makes me cringe. However, Lumia is new to Philippines so I guess they’re being ‘treated’  to the smoked challenges too.

Nokia, Why don’t you smoke your own phones? It’s annoying just seeing phones from competitors, or iPhone after iPhone. Why in a Nokia promo should I see less of the Nokia?!

Why not smoke one of your own smartphones. Perhaps one from last year’s model so it doesn’t greatly deface that phone. At the very least it would show progression.

I wish Nokia would just focus on the phone. Spend the time showing people some cool redeeming things about Lumia without the need to ever mention the competition.  Show more of the screen, more of the phone, more Nokia specific things. Show me people enjoying using the phone, using it in real life to get something done.

E.G. to demonstrate that Lumia does things quickly, why not have a guy who’s in a rush do certain actions super quick on the Lumia – put some catchy slogan at the end about “quick, simple, no fuss”. It’s a true statement, it’s one consumers can appreciate without having to put down other people’s phones.

On future note, when promoting the Nokia 808 PureView, focus on how it’s just the best camera phone ever. No need to talk about cameras on other smartphones. The simple truth that the pictures are the most phenomenal quality, most extreme in detail. Offer these nuggets of selling points in the adverts. If the consumer wants the most phenomenal, most extreme in detail etc, they know what to go for. There is absolutely ZERO reason to even dare contemplate mentioning cameras from competitors. It just gets messy.

Flo-Rida Get’s a Stormtrooper Lumia 900; Claims it “Feels Good”

No better way to get into the minds of people than through their favorite celebrities right? At least that’s the approach Nokia seems to have taken up now (not a bad thing); first with the Huge Niki Minaj Times square event then getting Khloe Kardashian to promote it along with WP and now getting one into the hand’s of Flo-Rida who apparently got his off the set of “whistle” (maybe an upcoming movie? which would mean more product placement. YAY!)

Update: Turns out “Whistle” is his latest song; which would mean he was probably filming the music video; still expect to see some Stormtrooper action in it.

FLO RIDA ‏ @official_flo

Got the new Nokia Lumia 900 from the set of #Whistle.#GoodFeeling!

This isn’t the first time Flo-Rida used a Lumia device, his music video “Wild Ones” featured the Lumia 710 a couple months ago, but at least this tweet was sent from a WP unlike Niki who tweeted how much she loved her WP through her BB.

Thanks for the tip DKM :D

Video: Nokia Magician and Cafe Challenge

Posted: 08 May 2012 11:36 AM PDT

Here’s a pretty cool random video that the Nokia channel just uploaded, it’s one of their Lumia challenges (in the UK I think), thankfully it doesn’t look staged (there was one in India with the beauy queen which so obviously fake, didn’y even bother posting about it) although interestingly the guy use wikitude instead of Local scout or Bing search- but showing off the augmented reality thing is a sick plus.

Regardless the girl walked away with a free Lumia 800, and her friend got something too, can’t tell what it is but it looks like an accessory of some sort, maybe one of those awesome charger sticks? (which are really cool- totally want one; but they’re not available here :/ )

Name that Nokia!

Posted: 08 May 2012 07:58 AM PDT

Saw this on my feed from Nokia’s facebook page. Worth sharing as it’s a bit of light fun.

It’s an 8-Bit homage of sorts to some Nokia devices. Can you name what they are?

MOAR APPS! Nokia Announces New WP Apps at CTIA

Posted: 08 May 2012 06:32 AM PDT

APPS APPS APPS! ECOSYSTEM! Nokia has just announced some major partnerships with some of the largest Mobile Application developers that will bring loads of Apps to the Windows Phone Platform, and some exclusively to Lumia devices.

  • ESPN – exclusive to Nokia Lumia until May 2013
Games:
  • Rovio – titles starting with Angry Birds Space join the original Angry Birds game in coming to Nokia Lumia and Windows Phone consumers- it would seem that Nokia and Rovio put any conflicts about ditching Symbian after getting the Angry Birds guys to commit behind them, and are now moving forward making this world a better place- one green Pig at a time.
“Nokia is one of our longest-standing partners, and Windows Phone and Lumia are of strategic importance to Rovio. We are very committed to bring our games to Lumia devices, and are looking forward to delighting our fans on the Windows Phone platform,” said Mikael Hed, CEO of Rovio

Tripdots helps vehicle owners optimize their driving behaviors while connecting with other vehicle owners and sharing driving efficiency achievements via social networks. With support for nine languages, Box for Windows Phone will enable users across the globe to browse, search and share files from their account.

I just think it’s worth pointing out that Some apps are starting to LAUNCH off of WP rather than being ported to it, which is definitely a good sign of a strong ecosystem (now well over 80K apps).

Nokia Lumia 900 wins best outdoor readability test, congrats Nokia CBD

Posted: 08 May 2012 05:50 AM PDT

The Verge reports on some info by DisplayMate that crowns the Nokia Lumia 900′s display as the best for outdoor readability.

The DisplayMate Contrast Rating for High Ambient Light for the displays ranges from a low of 15 (HTC Desire) to a high of 90 (Nokia Lumia 900). From both the Lab Measurements and the Screen Shot Viewing Tests (below) the top performing device for display viewability under Bright Ambient Lighting is the Nokia Lumia 900. This results from a combination of its high screen Brightness and low screen Reflectance, which Nokia calls ClearBlack technology.

http://www.displaymate.com/Mobile_Brightness_ShootOut_2.htm

Nokia really did step up where things counted with their Clear Black Display technology – something that actually counts in the usability of phones when we’re outdoors. It makes the displays super readable outdoors but also the blacks melt into the bezel (when AMOLED) helping even LCD screens.

I like how I don’t have to cover up the phone’s screen to see what’s on it. This is just something that cannot be appreciated on paper.

There was another story back in April that I don’t think I managed to write about – it was another Display Mate test showing that Nokia Lumia 900 had the lowest reflectance, something that also helps in general usage of the phone.

Next Billion event, May 15th, Pakistan? Full touch swipey S40?

Posted: 08 May 2012 05:39 AM PDT

Apparently there’ll be a launch of a couple of new Nokia phones in Pakistan related to the next billion. An invite sent out to bloggers mentions the following:

"Nokia envisions is to connect the next billion people and the first ever announcement from Pakistan of the upcoming devices have been planned specifically with this goal in mind.

Could we see some refreshed S40? Remember the full screen S40 screenshots? It showed some nice gestures/swiping as well as multitouch, a very nice experience for what was technically not a smartphone.

Nokia Indoor Maps for India (across 17 states)

According to TheMobileIndian, Nokia and NAVTEQ are bringing indoor navigation to 17 states in India.

Director of Map and Content at Nokia (for Sub Indian Continent) said:

The concept of indoor mapping is extremely relevant in India where the mall culture has gripped Indians of all ages. More importantly, Navteq Destination Maps allows applications to easily and seamlessly extend the navigation experience from the outside, all the way to the front door of a shop within a mall

Video: Nokia City Lens for Nokia Lumia: Augmented Reality Browser (Beta)

Posted: 08 May 2012 05:26 AM PDT

Jason Walsh from Nokia shares this presentation of Nokia City Lens. This lets you explore and discover things around you – apparently not just in an arbitrary way but showing you what’s actually around you. It’s not anything particularly new to me, but I do applaud them on this style of presentation that shows off what something does.

It’s pretty nice how you can get various views, from augmented reality to standard map mode by simply moing your phone from one plane to another. No tapping in menus or waiting for things to load.

Nokia City Lens http://nokia.ly/Im17jr instantly connects you to all of the places you’re looking for—and even more importantly—gets you there exactly when and how you want to. Now available on Nokia Betalabs.

Just landed in town and looking for a good restaurant? Interested in checking out the local museum or theater? Time to hit the nearest transit station to catch a ride uptown? No longer is finding your chosen destination a hassle—whether you’re in a new city or your hometown.

Now you can simply launch Nokia City Lens on your phone to easily find all the places you want to go. City Lens instantly reveals what you’re looking for on your phone’s camera display, no matter if it’s down the street or just around the corner.

You simply tap your chosen destination on your screen to conveniently access walking directions, make a reservation, or learn more detailed information about the locale.
