AT&T Getting Sony Xperia Ion in June, According to Google Ad in Gmail

Posted: 10 May 2012 01:06 PM PDT

Well, sometimes Google’s ads have the unique ability of revealing products ahead of their announcement. The Sony Xperia Ion may have been announced back at CES 2012, but no carrier in the States has confirmed a launch date yet. However, a recent ad spotted in Gmail shows the Ion as coming to the States in June.

Google’s advertising department rushed on this one and revealed the launch date on AT&T for the LTE smartphone. The banner in case was found by a reader of Droid Matters, who sent in the tip. The Xperia Ion is a 10.8mm thick phone, that weighs 144 grams and sports a 4.55 inch 720p screen with Mobile Bravia Engine tech. Its specs are very much like the ones of the Xperia S, except for the fact that this model has a microSD card slot and 16GB of storage, while the Xperia S lacked a card slot.

The Ion offers LTE, NFC, WiFi, DLNA and a 12 megapixel camera that I’m sure is the same sensor as the one on the Xperia S. With a bit of luck you’ll get your unit already updated to Android 4.0, since it would be ridiculous for AT&T to sell a flagship phone like this with Gingerbread. The CPU inside the newcomer is a Qualcomm MSM8260 Snapdragon.

FREE GPS solution with one of the best applications available for Android and iOS!

Posted: 10 May 2012 09:12 AM PDT

All alternatives for offline GPS navigation are expensive. Google Maps is doing quite well, but can’t compete with present solutions and dedicated GPS devices, such as Sygic, Garmin, TomTom or … CoPilot. The last one mentioned can be used for free as of right now.

CoPilot is not just a very popular solution, it’s certainly among the best on the market at this time. ALK Technologies, de ones behind this great GPS Nav. solution , have long promised to launch a free version of their application for Android and IOS. That moment is now, users of both platforms can enjoy the benefit of downloading the app for free. Well, now let’s see limitations. To use CoPilot you will need to create an account. Then you select the language and voice guidance and last but not least you will download the map you want to use. We recommend a wireless connection for downloading the maps as some can take some space. Now we see the first limitation. Once you have selected a map, you will need to pay for the use of another one. The price is acceptable in my opinion. We are talking about one of the best Navigation apps out there. About 30 Euros for a map.
The next limitation can be easily observed at a first glance of the map. We do not benefit from 3D Display and turn-by-turn, voice assisted guidance. The good part is that this feature is available at a very good price - 19 Euro. We’re about done with the limitations. Feature wise, everything you could expect from an advanced GPS application is available. Weather, parking, points of interest with Wikipedia information, coordinates and satellite photos. iOS users even get a music player. Social integration with Facebook and Twitter is also available.

The free version of CoPilot was released especially for mapping and planning but I think it can very easily be used for navigation. It’s praised initiative by ALK Technologies and want to benefit from the growing number of such solutions and from other developers. For Android, download the application on the Play Store for iOS it’s available through iTunes.

You can read the official press release here.

LG Optimus LTE 2 Comes With Voice Activated Shutter, Best Shot, HDR Features

Posted: 10 May 2012 04:17 AM PDT

It appears that only the HTC One series and the Samsung Galaxy S III have innovative camera features, but also LG’s latest piece of work, the Optimus LTE 2 model. Announced a week ago a day after the Galaxy S III debut, this very first handset with 2GB of RAM has more interesting functions for the public, some of them detailed below.

We focus primarily on the camera and in case you want to know, this model is limited to an initial release in Korea alone. We know that the LG Optimus LTE 2 packs a True IPS LCD display, 2GB of RAM, a 2150 mAh battery and now we found out that it features a voice command activated shutter. This means that simply by saying “Cheese” you’ll have taken a picture, if that’s the case. Just like the HTC One series, the latest LG phone gets an instant shutter with a best shot function.

The Galaxy S III also got that, so it’s a very popular choice. The reason for so many camera enhancements is the evolution of processors and software, so all the quad core and evolved dual core chipsets, plus the latest Android are to thank for that. LG Optimus LTE 2 will be a very interesting device to see on the market, especially if it manages not to cannibalize the LG Optimus 4X HD.

Sony ST26i Leaks, Looks Like a Lower End Smartphone, Doesn’t Have the Standard Green Logo

Posted: 10 May 2012 01:59 AM PDT

Sony Ericsson handsets were easy to spot over the past years, since they always had that cute little green globe for a logo. Now we’ve found a leaked picture of a mystery handset called Sony ST26i, that doesn’t appear to sport that logo. We also have specs for it, so keep reading.

A tipster pointed out some specs for Phone Arena, including a 4 inch qHD display, a 1 GHz ST-Ericsson U8500 chipset and 512MB of RAM. There’s also 8GB of storage and a camera capable of HD video on board. It’s been a busy week for Sony, that yesterday unveiled two new Xperia models, the Xperia GX and SX, with LTE and Android 4.0. They will only come to Japan and in other news we’ve also heard recent rumors about the Hayabusa model from Sony, a supposed higher end device.

Back to the Sony ST26i, this one looks more like a lower end unit, or even midrange if you want, since at least it’s not a sub 1 GHz handset like the HTC Wildfire C. Worst case scenario, this is a mere prototype that will never get made. Best case scenario we’ll see his model launching this summer, maybe with some other new Xperias.

HTC One X for AT&T/Rogers Gets Rooted Easily

Posted: 10 May 2012 12:25 AM PDT

AT&T has been in the news a lot when the word got out that they have restricted the bootloader on the HTC One X. They did that to prevent the source code from being tinkered with, but good old developers found a way to root the phone in the end.

The version of the One X selling on Rogers in Canada was also part of this rooting process. Kennethpenn is the one providing directions via the XDA Developers community, but anyway the root is not for users who don’t know what they’re doing, so be careful if you perform it. At least the process is fairly easy to perform: you have to download HTC drivers and a small script, plus the smartphone to the PC and double click the script. It appears you won’t be able to flash custom ROMs yet, but at least you can root the HTC One X, right?

WiFi Tether and Titanium Backup are two examples of root-only apps that you can download on your device, for example. Also, you can get rid of the bloatware that fills your phone, courtesy of the carriers, simply by disabling it. So, the aim here is getting full control over the handset you’ve purchased and that’s exactly what the root offers. More info can be found on XDA.
