Nokia 808 at Mount Everest, confirmed for June in Finland.

Posted: 29 May 2012 04:00 PM PDT

A week ago, Atte Miettinen climbed Mount Everest and brought along the Nokia 808 PureView. He had a SLR with him but found it much easier to carry the 808 PureView in obviously very challenging conditions.

Often people do not realize that a ten-week trip to Mount Everest is not just climbing. The journey is both physically and psychologically very demanding, but during the trip, however, a lot of time to themselves

…Photographs are important memories of the trips, and he wants to share them with friends and relatives. Images is always nice to come back and they bring up memories of what happened along the way.

In addition, NokConv Finland confirms the 808 will appear in Finland in June.

Lumiappaday #196: Turbo Camera demoed on the Nokia Lumia 800

Posted: 29 May 2012 03:58 PM PDT

We got recommended to try this app called ‘Turbo Camera’ an app for burst shots. Now Nokia’s officially bringing this and many other camera improvements with an official app that integrates straight into the main camera but until then, this is a nice option.

As well as taking pics at 30FPS+ (basically a video with individual frames, no) you can then turn these pictures into an animated .gif file. I didn’t know you could do that, i only read that now in the developer blurb.

You can initiate burst by touching the screen or pressing the camera button. Holding the camera button takes a sequence of photos, letting go stops. You can save all the shots, remove them all or save/remove one by one – each of which can be reviewed quite simply.

Sequence mode can be enhanced by changing the interval between photos. This would be useful for taking time lapse as well as adding a different style to your .gif. by reducing the frame rate down.

I guess I didn’t demo this too well – I thought this was just burst mode.

Nokia shop at IndiaTimes prices Nokia 808 PureView at 29,999INR

Posted: 29 May 2012 02:34 PM PDT

The 29,999 price was first seen in the pagesource of nokia.indiatimes.com.

http://mynokiablog.com/2012/05/12/nokia-808-pureview-expected-in-india-for-30k-inr/

We since had news saying it won’t sell at that price in India, with articles citing Nokia as the ones denying that price. Well, there’s a page for the Nokia 808 PureView that now shows 29,999INR. IndiaTimes is Alexa ranked #135 in the world, #10 in India.

Could it be just a placeholder price? Or is this the actual expected price for the Nokia 808 PureView in India?

The Dark Knight Rises Limited Edition Batman Nokia Lumia 900 pre-order at Phones4U – win VIP tickets to Premiere!

Posted: 29 May 2012 02:06 PM PDT

We got this email from Martyn saying that he’s played around with the Nokia Lumia 900 in stores and how there’s pre-orders available for the limited edition The Dark Knight Rises Batman etched Nokia Lumia 900. You get Free cinema tickets with every purchase plus a chance to win VIP tickets to the premiere. You also get free Monster Purity headsets if you get it before the end of May.

I wandered by the Phone4U shop on Market Street, Manchester today and noticed that they were advertising the Lumia 900 for sale.
I went into the shop, expecting it to be a pre order or something similar, however I was pleasantly surprised to see that they had a display Lumia 900.
I spoke to one of the sales people who said that he had a Lumia 800 and that he really liked it.
I had a play with the Lumia 900, which was running Tango. It was running very smoothly and the larger screen was very good. It was a Stormtrooper white Lumia on display but it was available in 4 other colours.
There is an offer on both the 900 and 800 that if they are bought before the end of may they come with a free pair of Monster Purity headphones.
I didn’t think that the 900 was going to be released in the UK until next month.
Apologies if you already know this.
Also, Phones4u are taking pre orders for the Dark Knight etched 900.
Hope this is of help.

Rumours: ‘Experts’ say Facebook might buy Nokia for £10B to build FacePhone

Posted: 29 May 2012 01:59 PM PDT

First…what? 10 Billion? Nokia’s worth more than that just for the patents alone. Stock market evaluation puts them at 11B (which would be expected to rise sharply should Nokia’s new strategy work out for them and they start bringing in profit again).

Some guy called, Paul Amsellem, managing director of Mobile Network Group, a mobile marketing company reckons

Facebook will launch the FacePhone. And whether it has a blue color and a logo with a big F on it, it will definitely be disruptive,

http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9227553/Facebook_could_buy_Nokia_to_build_FacePhone_expert_says_?

Computerworld says Microsoft’s already linked to Facebook and Amsellem says the three could be very powerful together.

Amsellem then goes on to say that if not Nokia then RIM. Another Facbeook buy could apparently be Opera.

Lumia is already pretty much a facebook phone. Integrated facebook contacts, integrated facebook feed, integrated facebook photos, integrated facebook chat. And the Blue Lumias are kind of Facebook themed. Not sure it needs any more Facebookness.

Facebook Phone – is that even a good idea?

Nokia Lumia 800 available at UAE

Posted: 29 May 2012 09:24 AM PDT

Here’s somethin that I found interesting – the Nokia Lumia 800 is available in UAE. Now availability in the Middle East has been difficult for Lumia because of the lack of language and marketplace support.

Elop said they would bring Lumia there when the full experience can be had.

The UAE Nokia Facebook page has left the message above indicating availability tomorrow. Price is at AED 1,899. That’s about 517USD or 329GBP. 900 will be launching later.

Cheers manu for the tip!

This video claims to have been shot on the Nokia 808 PureView.

It’s shot completely in black and white (or post processed?) with an audio overlay.

Commenting Help, Tips and Guides

I thought I’d run through some tips and guides about our comments section here. I’ve stickied this post under “About MyNokiaBlog”

Some things I wanted to cover:

HTML capabilities:

The comments are normally plain but if you know how to change HTML you can actually do a few things.

They’re not necessary but in case you ever wanted to. A bit like the Reddit system. The main point is to just the message, but for those in the know they can spice things up.

1) Bold BOLD

This appears as

<strong> BOLD</strong>

Just place the word or part of your comment that you want to appear in bold.

2) Italics Italics

This appears as

 <em>Italics</em>

3) Quotes. If you wanted to quote someone

Jay said above:

They’re not necessary but in case you ever wanted to

The tags are

<blockquote>They’re not necessary but in case you ever wanted to</blockquote>

4) Picture

You can also insert a picture. But try to keep the dimensions small or we’ll remove them.

 This appears as:

<a href=”http://mynokiablog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/feed-me-oil.jpg”><img title=”feed me oil” src=”http://mynokiablog.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/feed-me-oil.jpg” alt=”" width=”304″ height=”177″ />

Just replace the link with the URL of your image. The IMG title is what will appear if your mouse hovers. SRC again is just the link to the image and then you can leave the width and height as that.

5) Headings.

Both headings and colours might make this place a little too busy so I didn’t add it in the original post

<h1>Heading 1</h1>
<h2>Heading 2</h2>
<h3>Heading 3</h3>
<h4>Heading 4</h4>

6) Colours

BLUE YELLOW RED GREEN

<span style=”color: #000080;”>Blue</span>

<span style=”color: #ffff00;”>Yellow</span>

<span style=”color: #ff0000;”>Red</span>

 Tip:

Follow up comments/posts

Under your comment box you can see ‘notify me of follow up comments by email’ and ‘notify me of new posts by email’.

If you want to be emailed every time there is a new reply to the thread, click that post. You will get an email where you have to confirm whether you want this. You can edit your subscription there too.

Notify for new posts is useful as every time we post something new, it will appear in full at your email inbox.

General Commenting Rules:

  1. Post your comment in the right section to keep the discussions on topic.
  2. Please be respectful of other readers. Don’t use personal attacks and insults.
    1. It is possible to disagree with someone’s opinions and still be polite about it.
    2. Yes debates can get heated and some people may annoy you but try to keep a level head :)
  3. Please keep the discussions in English
  4. No ‘trolling’.
    1. Labelling someone a troll is difficult in itself. Someone that disagrees with your opinion is not automatically a troll
    2. I define a troll as someone who purposefully posts something antagonistic to try to get a response. Their opinions may not be backed up or they will post this repeatedly in multiple sections.
  5. No spamming
    1. This does not usually apply to the readers, more a policy on the automated spam.
    2. Generally askimet removes spam automatically. It has its own protocol set by askimet on what is spam. Sometimes unfortunately it catches out readers legitimate contents. Let me know and I’ll try and bring it back.
    3. Spamming may also constitute spamming your message. I don’t care what it is, just post it once.
    4. Your username is not a place for you to write a message. You may try to be clever and comment normally whilst your spammed username appears everywhere. Please, have  some respect.
    5. Try to keep one username on the board
  6. No to warez/illegal software/over 18 stuffs
    1. It’s very rare here (probably once a year if that) but I would like that developers be respected and their work not be spread around for free unless that is their wish.
  7. Try to keep the language safe for all. Try to avoid cussing/swearing
    1. Note, I say try. I know for some, it’s just second nature and they might not mean anything by it.
    2. If you can, try to keep your comments without words you wouldn’t say to a 3 year old, your mother or your boss etc
  8. Note: Posts with more than 4 links are automatically either sent to spam or sometimes held for moderation.
    1. You may need to split up posts with multiple links in order to bypass this.
  9. I may revise these at some points in the future.

Comments Not Appearing:

If a comment is posted and it doesn’t automatically appear, something has gone wrong with the spam filter. Apologies. Please let me know at jay@mynokiablog.com and I will find that in the spambox. More often than not, it has encountered a site it has previously put into spam or an IP address was once of a spammer. You may circumvent this through https://bitly.com/ or try posting again without a link and mention that your previous comments were not going through.

Comment removal

I rarely if at all remove a comment. The only thing I’d remove (and even that is last resort) is reader spam (automated spam that askimet misses will get removed once I see them). I may comment to you to at least give a warning/guidance and may link back to this page to explain. There is no rigid policing of comments here because the majority of our readers are awesome and can self moderate each other.

Anyway, continue as before. You may want to give the comment syntax a go here. Don’t feel you need to use them but in future, if the need arises (e.g. you may want to quote in a discussion) you can do so.

I’ll copy a portion of this in the comments so you can see how it appears below:

Video: Angry Birds on the Nokia Lumia 610

Posted: 29 May 2012 02:25 AM PDT

Do you remember that Skype was reportedly working on the Nokia Lumia 610 fine? Installing was prohibited through official channels but once you get it on the device it actually works properly.

http://mynokiablog.com/2012/05/24/video-skype-on-the-nokia-lumia-610/

Regardless, Nokia/MS were ‘unhappy’ with the performance and will not yet bring it officially.

Angry Birds faces this odd problem too. It officially is unable to install on the Nokia Lumia 610 – but it can work pretty well. So, it’s not about not being able to run it – it’s just not at the super fluid standards of previous WP. There are small lags but I suppose but not really noticeable to most people.

TheVerge reports that an official 256mb version is coming.

http://www.theverge.com/2012/5/28/3047773/windows-phone-tango-256mb-ram-app-games-restrictions

Once games are recompiled for Tango they will be allowed to install. I believe we posted a while ago about building Tango apps – they were meant to be more efficient. By working smoothly on 256mb, they work even better on 512mb devices.

Hmm. Perhaps it would have just been easier to keep the standard gen1 WP hardware? You can’t really expect people to think cheaper phone means less apps are compatible. This is not the PC World. Keep the optimisation process of apps in Tango but don’t create that initial install hindrance.

angry birds RUNNING on lumia 610.

since its in cantonese ill give a brief overview:

1. The first stage was smooth, due it being relatively uncluttered.
2. When the guy starts stage 20, there is a noticable lag at the beginning. However, he continued to say that panning and dragging were still relatively smooth.
3. When the guy starts stage 19, where there is noticeably longer loading times and more objects. Panning is still smooth unless it pans to the pigs where there is alot of objects. Dragging back the birds on the slingshot also show lagg.

He concludes by saying the gameplay mechanics are basically ok, is just that the lag that might occur at times might affect user experience.

To me the lag seems so miniscule a problem. Why not release the damn thing? =.= i guess aiming for consistency is good, but angry birds seems pretty playable to me.

Cheers arts for the tip!
