Happy Nokia 808 PureView Month :) Posted: 30 Apr 2012 05:25 PM PDT
It is finally May The month you’ve been waiting for. This is the month when the groundbreaking Nokia 808 PureView is due to appear in your hands. Well, maybe. The early adopters will be out to be one of the first. Some might wait a bit for the price to drop, others might wait for more regional availability. Fingers crossed Nokia delivers in May with no delay. Either way it’s a highly anticipated device because it features the unique PureView Pro technology; 41mp sensor bigger than any phone, bigger than point and shoots (even many of the top ones) and it’s all there to deliver super pixels and versatility in zoom. But that’s just specs – we have already seen countless of samples that prove it delivers. Some say Symbian might not be the most ideal – others will say it’s crucial to their purchase. I hope it will positively surprise everyone. |
Visualized: Nokia as we knew it, striving for survival. Posted: 30 Apr 2012 12:52 PM PDT I came across this video and upon watching it, many memories of Nokia rushed through my mind, its old struggles and new struggles, competition from rivals Samsung, Apple, OS rivals-Android, iOS and basically the media at large. Maybe it is just me and my memories of using Nokia tech, TV-out via RGB, GPUs back in the OMAP24xx era, Zeiss 5MP Xenon packing camera, playing One via hardware buttons, advanced Bluetooth profiles, HDMI and USB-OTG and other technologies that I was introduced to via Nokia devices. I am NOT saying Nokia was the first or best but hey, let me reminisce! It was a little sad, especially with the musical score, to remember the iconic Nseries devices that did it all and more, to see the little Nokia car that could, struggle with the competition, going through harsh environments, getting damaged, dirty along the way, a refreshing wash in the river (Belle update? lol)and power sliding the turns, showing a clear determination to stay relevant in the (Smartphone) race. Ah, it could just be me….mesmerized by my time off from work, spending way too much time oogling at the Pureview, flashing N8 Belle Roms and being baffled at the Lumia cab update files. Regardless, I find this video symbolic of Nokia’s past, present and future, loading up all it has (livery on the car), giving its best shot, among a sea of fierce competitors. Our dear readers, what comes to mind about Nokia when you watch this video, looking at the detail of the car and the races at hand? Do you have any fond memories of experiences with Nokia? Did you secretly wish the Nokia car would crash and burn? Did the music “take you back” to the glory days of Nokia, where in your own experience, Nokia could do no wrong? If nothing else, congrats and great job to the creator of the Nokia livery in Dirt 3: hahahi20 Source: YouTube |
NaviFirm Leaks: “Nokia Reaction” BT Headset & RM-568 Posted: 30 Apr 2012 12:14 PM PDT Prashant sent us the following NaviFirm screenshots which show off two unannounced items in the list, one is something called the “Nokia Reaction” or BH-907, this is obviously a bluetooth headset; but what’s interesting is that it’s the first Nokia accessory to have FW support; possibly a new item in the range of the Monster Puirities? The second device is RM-568 (listed as N/A), which is probably NOT a WP device as almost all of the released WP devices start with the code RM-8XX; my guess is that the 568 is probably a Symbian device possibly even an Asha/S40 device; but most probably a low end device. |
12072 Firmware rolling out in some regions for Nokia Lumia 800 Posted: 30 Apr 2012 08:34 AM PDT Quick heads up as I’m still in a meeting, the 12072 update for Nokia Lumia 800 is rolling out. I hate the naming of the update as I frankly can’t tell one from another.
Looking at the tips, this seems to be the 12072 update
MobileTechWorld has more info about what’s changed. This is not quite yet the WiFi tethering update: BTW, what battery life are you guys getting? Last check, mine gets between 1.5D normal use, 3-4d standby.

Nokia selling off luxury line Vertu? (+ small rant) Posted: 30 Apr 2012 05:57 AM PDT I saw this on Twitter this morning on my way to Uni, and was surprised it hadn’t been posted yet. Financial Times have reported that Nokia are in talks to sell off Vertu, their luxury phones division. I can’t say it is a surprising decision. I have never really seen Vertu phones in the wild, nor have I seen them for sale, other than when I was at the airport in Dubai a few years back. Although, it is said they have an annual revenue “estimated to be between €200m and €300m.” Given the low profits of Nokia lately, this sell off could be helpful, as they endeavor to focus on the next billion (and not the next billionaire). It is estimated that the selling of Vertu will raise approx €200m for the company. It’s not enough to completely save Nokia from doom, but if it means we will see them stay in the game longer, I say sell. There is a lot Nokia must do to turn around. Like Jay posted, Nokia is losing ground in the feature phone market. They need to cut the out-goings, refine and restructure resources, and deliver some killer devices, with announcement and release being within the month (ideally a fortnight but that won’t happen). Some may say it’s too little too late, but whilst Nokia still exists, it can still come back. Source: Financial Times Michael

Lumiappaday #167: SniperBoy demoed on the Nokia Lumia 800 Posted: 30 Apr 2012 05:14 AM PDT SniperBoy is a game about a kid with a sniper riple who has to shoot some robot targets down. His rifle fires a laser which may or may not bounce, showing where his bullet will ricochet. It’s actually a lot of fun, and reminds me somewhat of Portals 2D. Try to make sure you shoot down everything before the ammo runs out – and also that bullets do not bounce back to hit SniperBoy.

MobiCity lists Lumia 900 for pre-orders – Coming May 16th? Update: 808 listed – Coming May 21st? Posted: 30 Apr 2012 04:11 AM PDT Along with the other posts regarding the Lumia 900, I was on MobiCity today and saw the Lumia 900 listed as being up for pre-orders. It is good for us Aussies who have still been left in the dark as to whether or not we will get this device.
The site says that they are expected to be available from May 16, which seems to be the general consensus on the internet regarding its release. THAT’S ONLY 2 WEEKS AWAY. YAY! Update: As adamr pointed out, the 808 PureView is also listed, with an expected availability from May 21. Like the Lumia 900, no word yet on if this will hit Australia so again, it is good to see Australians have the option to purchase the device from an Australian online retailer (even though the device will be imported). It’s pretty steep at AUD$799, so hopefully it won’t be so high if it does launch around the country. Michael

Attraction for Nokia Mobile Phones waning, worry on the next billion Posted: 30 Apr 2012 03:56 AM PDT
Nokia’s star in emerging markets is apparently fading too.
Samsung on the otherhand have apparently been sending staff to visit. In China, local vendors are said to be prioritised over international ones. In Africa, whilst Nokia is still strong, they are yet to act on this decline. Here’s something key:
Oh, don’t we know it! They give Dual-SIM and full touch screens as an example but there’s so much more. Adapt quickly and correctly or die, Nokia seems to be very good at the latter. Nokia leaves the competition with an easy job of beating them. They mention some positive noise regarding the new Lumia devices in China, but there’s a mountain to climb for this to translate into sales.
Updated S40, 808 PureView, wider Lumia distribution and WP8/W8 devices can’t come sooner. Source: ibnlive.in.com Cheers Jill for the tip!

Video: Nokia Lumia 800 Wireless Charging mod Posted: 30 Apr 2012 03:05 AM PDT Check this out – someone has taken apart a Nokia Lumia 800 and modified it so that it could charge wirelessly. Well, you have to place it on the Palm Touchstone for conduction charging. They opened up the Lumia 800, stuck what looks like a copper coil inside. Metal was taken out so that this could fit. It’s a neat mod, though not one for the faint hearted. I saw this post earlier and it reminded me to get a Touchstone for my firesale Touchpad. They’re actually normally priced and in stock now as opposed to costing more than the tablet during the firesale. I believe the touchstone can also transfer data? At the end, they note how combined with Zune’s wireless sync, you won’t have to open up the charging port again (well not for a long while anyay. by olig89 Source: WPCentral Cheers Heron for the tip! Oh this reminds me of this accessory: |
