32GB Variant of White Nokia Lumia 900?

Posted: 25 May 2012 05:32 PM PDT

WMPoweruser reports on seeing a 32GB variant of the Stormtrooper white Nokia Lumia 900 at O2 Germany.

Now, this could simply be an error though a few things may suggest otherwise:

1) Germany has had variants before of WIndows Phone devices with larger capacity than standard – 16GB variants in phones that are 8GB elsewhere

2) WMPU has contacted O2 Germany customer service who confirms the 32GB size (they could be wrong, CS may simply be going from the data on the site) – they also have a printed brochure that shows the same 32GB storage.

This would be nice. 16GB seems to be the sweetspot since most people aren’t requiring much more than 8GB or 16GB. Nokia did have huge internal storage in the N97 and N900 (32GB) and up to 64GB in the top end Nokia N9. But if the majority being sold are the 16GB ones then it might be better economically to stick with that.

However, it would be nice to have options. It makes manufacturing harder as you have another variant but in the end, it’s good for the end consumer who wants more storage (especially if like the N9 or iPhone there is no MicroSD slot).

If this turns out to be real, I’d like this please. I’ve already used up a lot of space on my Lumia 800. 32GB is a nice minimum size for a geek I guess.

AllAboutSymbian’s Rafe Blandford on the Nokia 808 PureView + Gallery

Posted: 25 May 2012 05:21 PM PDT

Rafe Blandford from AllAboutSymbian and AAWP takes a look at the Nokia 808 PureView, sharing his experience as well as a pretty gallery to look at.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/rafeblandford/sets/72157629896009348/

There’s a lot to take in but Rafe says to expect an even more detailed review once units are available.

…it’s hard not to get excited. It really is an amazing imaging device – there’s a lot of hype around, but the truth is that it appears to be almost entirely justified.

Nokia has made some impressive imaging advances over the years with devices like the Nokia N90, N93, N82, N86 and N8, but the 808 stands out even from this select company. Yes, the Nokia 808 PureView sets a new benchmark for cameraphones. But the real eye opener is that it looks like Nokia has made what is arguably also the best compact camera on the planet.

You don’t have to take the word from the chief Symbian fan , Rafe alone(though Rafe is extremely fair in his opinions). We reported also that even Gizmodo were saying Nokia 808 PureView makes compacts and even bridge cameras obsolete, with Engadget saying Nokia 808 PureView sets a new benchmark for mobile imaging:

Gizmodo: Nokia 808 PureView "That camera is damn good – made compact cameras and maybe even bridge cameras obsolete"

Game Developer magazine: 8.8% surveyed making games for WP

Posted: 25 May 2012 09:35 AM PDT

Game Developer magazine released their data from a survey on mobile game development.

I didn’t quite catch the sample size, but it’s of no surprise that coming out on top at 94.6% is iOS, followed not so far behind with 70.7% by Android.

What is a surprise is that the smallest userbase, WP7 comes in at third. A long way away at 8.8%. But that is still more than BB, Symbian and Bada combined.

Blackberry is fourth at 2.7% followed by Symbian at 2% and at the very back is Bada at 1.4%

‘Rapid development time’ is supposedly the most important factor, followed by ‘Flexibility and easy extendability,” “Engine performance,” “Support and documentation,” and “Prior successful use by another team”.

Clove UK’s Nokia 808 PureView pushed back to mid-late July

Posted: 25 May 2012 09:17 AM PDT

Apparently those who pre-ordered the Nokia 808 PureView in the UK from Clove will have to wait a little bit longer again. It was already moved from May to June. Not sure what’s going on.

http://mynokiablog.com/2012/05/09/rumour-nokia-808-pureview-stock-uk-due-from-june-4th/

Here is an email that reader, stylinred got:

You recently placed a pre-order with us for the Nokia 808 PureView, thank you.

We have today received information that the 808 will not be available for sale SIM-FREE through Clove until mid-late July.

We understand that this is not the news you want to hear, as stock was expected in early June but we are sure this phone (or camera with a phone) will be worth the wait.

At this time, unless we hear otherwise we will retain your pre-order and contact you when we have more information.

The Clove Technology Sales Team

Again I am not sure why but could it be related to this: Steve Litchfield says Nokia has not produced any retail Nokia 808 PureView yet. Well, there are already Nokia 808 PureViews seen by members of the public in UAE.

Creator of Gravity for Symbian, @janole asked Steve if he was sure. Steve said:

well I know they’re still tweaking the camera algorithms, video especially…

So UK stock is probably of least priority if other countries officially assigned will have to wait too.

Cheers Stylinred and Gerii for the tip!

Carla not cancelled because it is FP1

Posted: 25 May 2012 08:53 AM PDT

Back in February, when Ali showed us a hands on of the 808 in the firmware we saw that what we were presented as Belle FP1 seemed to have been none other than Carla.

http://mynokiablog.com/2012/02/28/nokia-belle-fp1-is-nokia-carla-v112-with-nokia-browser-8-2-so-carla-for-603-700-701/

Most recently in a Q&A with a Nokia person, they said that FP1 is Carla too.

One can say that Symbian FP1 and Symbian Belle Carla or this latest update will be released in the coming months?

Then: Carla is no longer a name we use. FP1 is pretty much that was once called Carla.

http://mynokiablog.com/2012/05/23/symbian-road-map-redefined-fp1-is-carla-n8-to-get-both-fp1-fp2/

As final confirmation in case some people are still missing the point, Nokia has also apparently contacted GSM Arena to confirm Carla is NOT cancelled and that it is simply renamed to FP1.

http://www.gsmarena.com/nokia_confirms_that_carla_update_for_symbian_is_not_cancelled-news-4298.php

So many will it-won’t it news -_-.

Nokia’s PureView – Gizmodo gets it

Posted: 25 May 2012 05:26 AM PDT

It wasn’t that long ago after the Nokia 808 PureView launch that Gizmodo (Australia)  completely missed the point on what PureView was about – feeling it was marketing gimmick and that Nokia were simply ‘redefining the stupidphone’. But they were quick to admit they were wrong and just yesterday after trying it out first hand appeared to be blown away.

http://mynokiablog.com/2012/05/24/gizmodo-nokia-808-pureview-that-camera-is-damn-good-made-compact-cameras-and-maybe-even-bridge-cameras-obsolete/

Gizmodo is on a roll right now trumpeting great technology when they hear about it, in a piece that thankfully takes the time to explain what PureView is about.

http://www.gizmodo.co.uk/2012/05/what-is-nokia-really-banging-on-about-with-its-pureview-technology/

http://gizmodo.com/5913264/what-is-nokias-pureview-technology

If Nokia can deliver results that are worth it, I think people can be willing to compromise on size. I mean, look at the SG Note. Obscene at first launch but now defining this ‘phablet’ for people who want that additional functionality in their phone. Why not have a slightly thicker phone at one end to always have that amazing camera and capture all those priceless memories with you?

Gizmodo notes that Nokia will be making slimmer devices with PureView. not necessarily in this combination (41MP) but the same underlying technology to deliver the highest quality in mobile imaging.

Here’s to Nokia, truly trying to deliver innovation that matters to the consumer. It’s not about just having bigger numbers, but really it’s all about giving the consumer the best audio/visual experiences – the highest photo quality – improvements where it counts.
