Posted: 07 May 2012 04:00 PM PDT

Nokia is honored that the Nokia Lumia 610 NFC will be one the world’s first smartphones to include MasterCard’s PayPass Ready brand mark,” said Andrea Bacioccola, NFC Lead Program Manager, Nokia. “This sends a clear message to operators, banks and other service providers that Nokia is able to quickly enable their payment services on this smartphone

By working closely with standards bodies including EMVCo and the NFC Forum, MasterCard continues to lead the industry in testing and certification processes for mobile payment devices. Devices certified by MasterCard go through a rigorous testing process by a MasterCard-accredited laboratory to ensure devices are functionally reliable and interoperable.

“In the near future, millions of phones will ship with NFC technology embedded within them. The new PayPass Ready identifier will help consumers make informed device purchasing decisions by providing a visual mark that indicates devices are certified to make simple, smart and secure payments via the MasterCard PayPass network,” said Mung Ki Woo, group executive, Mobile at MasterCard.

GSMArena: RIM’S BB10 OS screenshots…Nokia N9′s Swipe UI?

Posted: 07 May 2012 10:13 AM PDT

Over at GSM Arena, they’re looking at the new BB10 screenshots and reckon it looks like the N9 Swipe UI. It kinda looks like Samsung tried to touchwiz-up Swipe UI :/

By the looks of it the new OS looks and behaves very much like the Swipe UI found on the MeeGo-running Nokia N9.

Here we've laid out a comparison between the UI on the N9 and the one on the BB10 device from the leaked image. Looks very similar, doesn't it? The first screen is the app launcher, a swipe to the left reveals the task manager, while a swipe to the right will take you to the unified notifications screen.

Nokia 808 PureView confirmed to not be coming to Australia

Posted: 07 May 2012 08:14 AM PDT

Some upsetting news has just come up on my screen. CNet Australia has put up an article saying that the 808 will not be coming down under. I can’t say I am surprised, but it would have been nice. It is clear that Nokia Australia want to focus on the Lumia portfolio, as mentioned in the launch I attended in February.

The official statement from Nokia is as follows

We’re not bringing the PureView 808 to Australia; our smartphone focus is on Nokia with Windows Phone, which we believe is the best fit for this market. You’ll see variations of PureView imaging technology delivered to several Nokia products in the future

Part 1: Transcript Nokia AGM: Stephen Elop on Skype (Updated with Video)

Posted: 07 May 2012 05:40 AM PDT

I got contacted by John, communications director with Nokia in Espoo. John had a video of Stephen Elop’s actual comments about Skype.

There was some confusion that day from another source that ended up with a different conclusion from the meeting. Our reader Janne tried to clear it up in a post below.

http://mynokiablog.com/2012/05/04/mnb-reader-generated-fact-checking-what-was-said-at-nokia-agm/

The only thing that could possibly really clear it up would be perhaps other attendees confirming what happened or possibly the video of the AGM meeting. This is the transcript (Verbatim) of the video that is currently rendering. Looking at Janne’s write up and the transcript, this seems more in line, no?

Update: Video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lpgYc2MRE_Q

Stephen Elop: So, thank you for your question about Skype. Indeed, Microsoft did buy the Skype company as part of the ecosystem that comes with Windows Phone and Windows and so forth, so that's quite correct. The feedback from operators is they don't like Skype, of course, because for those operators who have a traditional wire-line business, traditional telephone business, it could take away from revenues.

And, so what MSFT has done – and we've been part of these conversations as well with operators – is as you correctly say, if operator doesn't want Skype installed on a Windows Phone from Nokia or any other company, then the operator can make that decision.

Now, you're right: it can be circumvented. But of course it's on all Android devices, it's on iPhone devices, it's on iPad, it's on all of those devices. So in fact what we're doing with the operators is turning it around into an advantage. Instead of them just complaining about Skype on Android or Skype on iPhone, with Microsoft and Nokia, we can have a conversation that says "ok there, is this Skype thing, is there a different type of partnership we can do that recognizes that voice over IP like Skype is coming no matter what, but maybe we can do something creative that generates incremental revenue for you." Some operators are looking at bundling Lumia, Skype and their own services with higher-bandwidth allotments to actually charge the consumer more and generate more revenue for them. So by actually controlling the Skype asset, we can begin a conversation about how we can have a better Skype-based relationship, which was impossible for operators to do before. So it's actually quite a bit more advanced than whether operators like or don't like Skype; they actually want to engage in a conversation about what does this mean and how could we do something that we couldn't do before. Thank you.

Cheers John for the tip!

Nokia Lumia 610 available in Malaysia

Posted: 07 May 2012 02:55 AM PDT

Quick heads up: The Nokia Lumia 610 is available in Malaysia. Just over a week ago it was available in the Philippines. I’m not sure of all the countries where this is available, but it needs to be unleashed everywhere. It’s a very well priced budget smartphone – one that could really help boost sales of Lumia.

Lumiappaday #174: Totemo demoed on the Nokia Lumia 800

Posted: 07 May 2012 01:39 AM PDT

Totemo is a cross platform puzzle game. As you can guess, there is a Totem Pole/Shaman theme. The aim of the game is to release/guide the spirits. Basically match things. Some spirits need to be paired (And can only be paired with those on the same vertical or horizontal axis). They may only need one or they may need three. There might be more aspects to this – I only showed some a few levels in the demo.

I like the look and the gameplay a lot. Definitely worth giving a go in the trial to see if you’ll like it too.

Screenshots: Wazzap on N9

Posted: 06 May 2012 09:46 PM PDT

Arie from EverythingN9 tipped me in that they have gotten an exclusive to demo Wazzap on their N9. I am quite jealous.

http://everythingn9.com/world-first-wazzap-for-the-nokia-n9/

They have posted up screenshots of the app UI. It looks quite good. I think I like it better than the official version. Take a look at the screenshots below.

Arie says the app;

works flawlessly, and is pretty cool. It does everything the basic whatsapp client does. There is definitely a lot of work TGalal has put in to porting this app. I am impressed by the app and tgalal deserves all the credit. Future updates will get group convos, picture sending, and video sending.

I am looking forward to its public release, which should be soon. Keep your eye on MNB for the latest.

Michael
